The Global Read Aloud (GRA) is a 6 week program (which runs from October 3rd to November 11th) that not only promotes and builds on a love of reading but fosters global competencies and connections. Each week, teachers read a certain number of chapters of each age group's assigned book to the students aloud. Students exchange and make connections with other students and classrooms across the globe who are also participating in the GRA. Teachers can connect with other participating classrooms through the GRA Twitter (#GRA22) or Facebook groups. Students collaborate with their global partners on a global project related to their book. These global connections can be maintained throughout the remainder of the school year too! For more information, please visit the GRA blog https://theglobalreadaloud.com/ or feel free to reach out to me

The Forest of Reading ® is an annual reading program run by the Ontario Library Association, celebrating Canadian books, publishers, authors, and illustrators. For each “tree” in the Forest of Reading ®, there are ten titles that have been selected for reading. Students/participants read a minimum of five titles and then vote for their favourite, culminating in the announcement of the award winner.
See the official OLA Forest of Reading website for more information about the Forest and the various Forest reading branches.
Here is a quick overview of the branches/programs:
Blue spruce™ (K-gr.2); Silver Birch express® award (gr. 3-4); Silver Birch Fiction award ® (gr.5-6); Yellow Cedar (gr. 5-8 non-fiction); le Prix Peuplier (picture books); le Prix Mélèze (short illustrated chapter books); le prix Tamarac (non illustrated chapter books).
We will start the Forest of Reading/ la Forêt de la Lecture ® program in the new year and it will run until the Festival of Trees in the Spring of 2022.
Throughout the program, students will be encouraged to read as many titles in their "tree branch" and vote for their favourites. We will also do many fun, creative, and engaging activities (even makerspace activities) connected to our reading!
Here is a helpful link on mystery skype and how to get it up and running. I am more than happy to host some mystery skype sessions in the LLC during partnership periods. It is a wonderful inquiry based activity that ties in with all global competencies: critical thinking and problem solving, global citizenship and character, communication, collaboration and leadership, creativity, inquiry and entrepreneurship! This activity will give students a feel for those important and essential global connections and collaborations that they would foster through the global read aloud. It is also a great way to network and make connections with other school communities who wish to collaborate and do some parallel activities and reading with Regal Road students for the Global Read Aloud! Please come see me or Ms.Ross if you have any questions about the GRA program!
Book promotions/tours (students promote great reads over the PA system or visit classes to promote a great book they are reading).
Read-a-thon (e.g.: 3 read-a-thon days in the entire school year where students D.E.A.R/drop everything and read for the entire afternoon).
Battle of the books (Students debate with a peer as to why they think their book is better. They can discuss plot, character, and setting etc.
Book club in those chilly winter months! Students can stay warm and get reading in the LLC during our winter book club (maybe with some hot cocoa??). We could also do a virtual book club using biblionasium: a safe, fun, and social reading community for students, teachers, and parents/caregivers. www.biblionasium.com
Home connection - Family Trivia night with the Ontario Science Centre. This is a great way to promote the reading of non-fiction texts (lots of non-fiction texts to choose from in the TDSB virtual library) and great fun for all the family! https.//www.ontariosciencecentre.ca/what-s-on/virtual-events-plus-programs-list/family-trivia-night
Reading... outside! (Students could create comfy outdoor reading nooks and get reading outside. We could also make some STEAM connections and take the learning related to their reading outdoors!)
Exploring electronic books (on TDSB library!)
Lunch and listen (run by TL, teacher or community/parent/caregiver volunteers - students come have lunch and listen to a read-aloud in the LLC. Possibility of extension activities afterwards)
Free little library within our school halls / book swap. Students exchange lightly used books in our little library http://www.littlefreelibrary.org
Teachers can partake in recreational reading too by joining our staff reading challenge! Please see below :)
