Library helpers create STEM stations for curriculum night each year in order to provide families with a glimpse of what goes on in our library learning commons and makerspace. Each year they choose a theme, this year they chose animation. Today they made lego wall animations and popsicle stick puzzles in preparation, such creativity!
Through this read-aloud, inquiry, and creative STEM challenges, students reflected on how kindness is an action that can grow, connect, and make a positive impact on themselves, their friends, and the wider world
For the first week of school, room 6 explored the themes in the picture book: "First Day" by Katherena Vermette: This Indigenous picture book prompted discussions about empathy and creating a welcoming environment. Students explored the question, "What can we build to feel better?" They brainstormed and built objects (in STEM stations) like a heart or a bridge, focusing on how these creations could help others feel safe and included at school. This activity linked STEM concepts to social-emotional learning, showing how building and design can address personal and community classroom building needs.
For week 2 of JK/SK inquiry with room 6, I used the book All Are Welcome Here as a guide to teach students about community, diversity, and collaboration through STEM activities.
Here is an overview:
Building Community and Home Students learned about what makes a community and what makes their own homes unique. They built community places like a school or library with blocks and planks, and then constructed homes for their families using Lego and connecting cubes.
Connections and Welcoming Spaces The focus shifted to building connections. Students worked with partners to create bridges to connect different "places," and then designed welcoming playgrounds with stacking cups and blocks, emphasizing inclusivity.
The Collaborative City The week culminated in a grand project where students combined all their individual creations to build one giant, collaborative city. This final activity reinforced the week's theme of working together to create something beautiful.
