Junior and primary students from rooms 21 and 12 have continued to explore design thinking, 3D printing, and robotics through our CCEL. Here is an overview of many of our recent workshops. Two very popular workshops were named "frustration" day and "autonomy" day!
Students in Ms Gharaiya's class have been working on poetry making through the lens of social justice. Students worked with Ms. Gharaiya and me to transform their poetry into CLIPS using ipads during collaborative partnerships (in order to make soundscapes). With Ms Gharaiya and Ms. Ballantyne (learning coach) and myself, students went one step further by transforming their drawings into digital images using an AI image generator on Adobe express. They then started Adobe spoken word videos. Students learned that AI is all about the details!
I went to Tippett the other day (TDSB central library) to learn alongside and share ideas with other teacher-librarians. Here are some pictures of this digital STEM "playground". Lots of ideas flowing and to bring back to RRPS's LLC!
Engineer Design Thinking through Smart home microbit building (skilled tradesfor community connected experiential learning: engineering).
Our 3D printed Regal Road runner mascot!
A new month means a new diplay! This month is Greek heritage month at the TDSB and dates of significance include International Women's day and Ramadan (Feb 28-March 29). Our LLC displays reflect and celebrate these. Happy reading RRPS!
Students continued to explore Design Thinking (empathize; define; ideate; prototype; test) as they brainstorm and lead up to their engineering and skilled trades project. They will build a smart home using microbits, microbits accessories, coding languages (python, java script), and 3D printed designs! Watch this space for more to come ..!
February's LLC display focuses on African and Chinese Heritage month. We have a great range of mentor texts to highlight, learn about, and celebrate these heritage months. Library helpers are also curating some books for Valentine's - let's spread to love of reading RRPS!
Room 31 (grade 4/5) is working on life systems and body systems for science. They are researching and creating 3D animal habitats and 3D body systems. They are then applying STEM skills by learning to colour code with ozobots which will explore and micmick codes relvant to their animal or their body system. Ms. Gharaiya and I are documenting all their great learning as part of a MAP (Mobile Assessment Practices) course we are doing at APPLE. Watch this space as the project unfolds!
Students in room 21 explored Codey Rockies (that we booked through the professional library) for the first time. Lots of global competencies were practiced as students problem solved, communicated and collaborated in order to figure out how to code with them.
Here is a sneak peek into one of our new partnerships this term. With Mme Gharaiya's class, grade 4 and 5 students will be researching body systems (gr.5) and animals and habitats (gr.4) through a 3D model and ozobot colour coded pathway (with codes that mimick the body system or animal). Students tested out codes with the ozobots this week before delving into research which will start next week.
A new display for a new year! January 2025's display focuses on social emotional well-being (given it is SAD season: Seasonal Affective Disorder - to give us a boost of positivity), as well as Tamil Heritage month and Chinese new year (which will be celebrated on January 29th this year - it will be the year of the dragon). Happy reading Regal Road!
The last LLC display of 2024! December's LLC display focuses on all winter celebrations: Christmas (25th); Hanukkah (25th - Jan 2); and Kwanzaa (26 - Jan 1); as well as the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (Dec 3); and Human Rights Day (Dec 10). Happy reading RRPS!
Some of our December partnerships ended with a Gallery Move/STEAM fair. Mr. Stickle's class invited families to see their culminating science projects focused around body and eco systems. Here are some snippets!
JK/SK inquiry focuced on FNMI books with Indigenous education themes; as well as loose parts, computational thinking and literacy through talebot coding on coding maps.
November's LLC display focuses on Indigenous Education, Hindu Heritage month, Remembrance Day on November 11th, and Anti-Bullying and Prevention week (November 11th-17th). Our display reflects and supports learning around these themes.
GSA this year is about all things inclusivity! It is a student-led and driven club that focuses on students' areas of interest. RRPS students want to strive for a more inclusive school climate. This club will involve all things equity and inclusivity including being eco consciousness and being kind to nature! The 11th to the 17th of November is anti-bullying week and students are creating anti-bullying/kindness spreading posters and messages in the school. Watch this space for more to come!
Ms. Gharaiya's class is creating narratives around themes of social justice. They will be coding Dashbots to act out their social justice narratives. More to come soon!
Mme Irimescu's class is exploring Indigenous artefacts through Scratch with the Hack the Rom program. Lots of creative wireframing and storyboarding to plan out their Scratch projects showcasing an indigenous aretfact (e.g: Moccasins, deadfall trap etc.). More posts will follow as this project unfolds!
Here is a glimpse into one of our partnerships. With Mr. Stickle's class, students are exploring body and eco systems as part of their science project. They are connecting these to robotics (e.g: ozobot maps of the digestive system and codes that reflect digestive function: tornado code in the stomach to show it churning, zizag in intestines to reflect food making it's way down etc.), as well as other TDSB digital tools such as WEVIDEO, Mindomo, and Adobe Express. They will plug all their finshed work (Mindomo maps, picures of 3D models or ozobot maps) into Book Creator to house all their amazing work in one place! Watch this space for more to come!
October's LLC display focuses on Islamic and Somali heritage, as well as Women's History month at the TDSB. The International Day of the Girl is Friday October 11th, and Diwali will be celebrated on October 31st this year. Our LLC displays support these themes, happy reading!
Curriculum night was a great opportunity to connect with the parent and caregiver community and showcase some of the learning that goes on in the Library Learning Commons. Library helpers hosted STEAM stations. These included an ozobot station; Dashbot race station; Talebot obstacle station; and a TDSB Virtual Library station. Thank you for joining us and for those that couldn't be there, here is a LINK to some info in terms of LLC related learning.
Here is a glimpse at JK/SK inquiry so far. We have been delving into the themes surrounding FNMI (First Nations Metis and Inuit) picture books (e.g: My Heart Fills with Happiness by Monique Gray; and My Day with Yayah by Nicola Campbell).
Some inquiry questions around these read-alouds have been: What gifts do you give back to nature? and What fills your heart with happiness? Students in Ms. Glassman's class explored what filled their hearts with happiness using loose parts and white boards/dry erase markers. Next week they will explore these themes further through coding and robotics.
Some students created and coded a Dashbot race during STEAM stations recently.
