Students are decorating the collection boxes for our milk bag donations and collection. We are collecting milk bags to donate to milk bags unlimited who transform them into mats for the unhoused community. Students will also be making tote bags as part of an upcycling project using extra milk bags.
*REGAL ROAD Community members...
We are accepting milk bag donations. Milkbags will be collected on each floor in the student made (painted and labeled) collection boxes, thank you!
We are continuing to build on our eco actions over the past few years and hope to gain Platinum status for the 4th year in a row by upholding our eco-conscious actions and stewardness as a school community!
Eco leaders have been distributing posters and educating classrooms on how to properly sort their waste. Students have been participating in our 2023-2024 eco action goals on a regular basis. Have a look at our virtual eco room with the types of actions we have been working on this school year! RRPS Virtual Eco room *Please scroll down to see our actions.

Here are the eco actions we have taken on and hope to complete by the spring! We will also pair these with our CCEL schoolwide experiential learning project which will focus on Indigenous and land based learning and teaching. Last year we also worked with Indigenous knowledge keepers and focused on greening our spaces. We also focused on outdoor learning and play by building planters, sit spots, and giant outdoor games! This year we will showcase our learning around the seven grandfather teachings on wooden art installations which will be attached to our fencing. This will continue to encourage more outdoor learning and connecting to nature and the land.

These are just a few examples of eco conscious mindful acts in our school. Students have GOOS bins and have made signage drawing attention to how we can better care for the environment!
Our school got involved in the OASIS program as part of our eco initiatives and actions, as well as our CCEL project. Students learned about Indigenous ways of learning and caring for the land and planted the 3 sisters: Corn, beans, squash, as well as sunflowers. They started planting in their classrooms and will plant the remaining seeds in our new planters that we made in collaboration with Oakwood collegiate as part of our CCEL project.
The eco team and eco club invited our parents/caregivers to our mural unveiling
The students put 8 months of hard work into this beautiful upclyced bottle cap mural. All RRPS had a voice in the design!
Our finished upclycled Eco Mural which depicts a turtle which connects to Turtle island and the SDG "Life blow Water".
Students from Mr.O's class planted seeds that help attract butterflies. They prepared the soil, scattered the seeds, buried them in soil, and added fresh compost on top. They then gave the soil a very good drink of water! Watch this space as things unfold. We will also release the butterflies once they have gone through their life cycle!
This student who is part of the trash team started doing a litter sweep during recess and recruited other students to help! :)
One of our students Max from room 22 took the initiative to start a student led trash team! Students meet every Wednesday at lunch . They have started making posters to create awareness about reclycling, not littering, and protecting our environement! They will do community trash sweeps when the weather improves!
A picture of Ms. Kingman's pumpkin compost planting project. Another form of upcycling? More details to come!
Ms. Kingman's grade 3 class experimented with a pumpkin which they observed and decomposed over the course of a few months, and which they used for a planting project/experiment.
Eco club students hard at work and bringing our upcyled Eco mural to life! They are painting the canvas before adding the bottle caps
The students used pastels for the base on which they will add the different coloured bottle caps
Here is the colour scheme and layout of the mural they created. Next step: bottle caps!
From another angle, the finished product will look amazing, watch this space!
Our school won a grant for CAD 12000 for a CCEL project. Our project willl span from February to May 2023.
What is CCEL? CCEL is meaningful experiential learning that takes place in the community. It delvelops students' global competencies and provides them with opportunites for authentic learning, fosters collaboartion, as well as enables them to explore future potential career pathways connected to the skilled trades.
What is Regal Road's CCEL project going to be? Our school's focus will be on Indigenous and holistic land based learning, greening of our spaces, sustainability, and the building of wooden planters, games, and seating for our outdoor spaces. We will be working closely with an Indigenous partner, Luana Shirt, who will provide cultural teachings to students, teacher, and parent/caregivers (more information will be shared shortly!). We will also collaborate and partner with Oakwood Collegiate Institute and woodworking teacher Joe Flynn who will help us build giant games, planters, benches, and chalkboards for our outdoor spaces with our students and theirs. Regular updates will be shared in the HEBDO or on the latest news page, as well as on Twitter: @Vroucaud. If you wish to volunteer or get involved, please do not hesitate to reach out, thank you!

Regal Road has won bronze, silver and gold EcoSchools certification in the past. This year, we are eligible for platinum. Regal Road school's action plan includes 16 actions this year!
