What is the Breakfast Program? With the support from “Toronto Foundation for Student Success” and Model Schools for Inner Cities, Oakridge Junior Public School will be continuing with the healthy Breakfast program. It is our goal to provide a nutritious breakfast to students from grade 1 to grade 4 (five days a week).
Why offer a Breakfast Program? Research and studies have shown that children, even more than adults, need to have nutritious food in the morning because of their high metabolic rate. Without adequate morning nutrition, children suffer from fatigue, irritability, stomachaches and headaches, and an inability to concentrate, which prevents them from learning.
What types of Breakfast will be served? Our plan for this year is to offer a dairy program for our students. Students will receive various dairy based snacks (keeping in mind the dietary restrictions of our students) including milk, yogurt and cheese. All food meets the requirement of the Canada Food Guide and Student Nutrition Programs Standards. Our goal is to expand the program in the fall to provide the students with healthy food from as many of the four food groups as possible.
Who will pay for the Breakfast? “Toronto Foundation for Student Success” provided us with some funding for breakfast. All students are asked to pay $10 a month from September to June or $70 a lump sum for the year. The breakfast program will operate as long as funds are sufficient.
