Before Reading the Book:
Before you listen to the story online, use the following questions to discuss the topic of the book (The Metamorphosis/Changes that occur throughout the Life Cycle of a Butterfly: from egg-to caterpillar-to chrysalis/cocoon-and then to a butterfly/moth).
Review the background knowledge of the various topics/concepts (Days of the Week, Numbers, and Name of Fruits and other Types of Foods)
Build background knowledge (non fiction) of your child by discussing the following with him/her:
BUTTERFLIES:
What are some kinds of insects do you know?
What kinds of butterflies have you seen?
Where do you think butterflies come from?
Have you ever seen a caterpillar or touched a caterpillar?
If you have touched one, how did it feel?
Can you describe them?
What colour butterflies have you seen?
What facts do you know about butterflies (body parts, colours, habitats, food, movement)
LIFE CYCLE OF A BUTTERFLY: Watch the video and then discuss the diagram
Before Reading:
Ask questions or pose prompts. Some suggestions are:
A caterpillar is an insect. What are some other insects?
A caterpillar changes into something very beautiful. Do you know what it is?
What do you think the very hungry caterpillar likes to eat?
What do you like to eat?
While Reading:
Stop the story at appropriate parts to ask questions or pose prompts. Some suggestions are:
When you get to the various fruits, point to and guess with your child the number of fruits.
Count the last set of food, and ask “Do you think you could eat all that?” “How would you feel if you tried eating all these at once?” Then read the words on the bottom of the page:” That night he had a stomach ache”.
After reading the words,” He pushed his way-out and..”, then ask “What do you think he turned into?”
After Reading:
Briefly discuss how the caterpillar became a butterfly. Use fords like:” first, second, third/last”.
Turn/rewind to the pages/parts that show the fruits and ask “Which one of these is your favourite fruit?”
Turn/rewind to the pages/parts where all the different types of foods are displayed and ask “Do you think caterpillars eat these types of foods?”, “What do you think they actually eat?”, “If you could eat one of these foods, which one would you pick?” Show the foods and ask, “Which one tastes salty? Sweet? Sour?”
Reviewing and Building our Vocabulary! Play a matching game with the words and pictures found in the book or video.
Here are some words from the book. Using a pencil and similar sized paper, write the words listed below as well as the numbers from 1-7 in words and numerals. Use pencil crayons or markers to draw the pictures of the fruits and the various types of foods on different pieces of paper.
Use pencil crayons or markers to colour the pictures.
Write the names of the stages on strips of paper, cut them out and match them with the pictures on the sheet.
Ask yourself first: What are the stages in the life cycle of the butterfly that I need to make? Using found object at home (i.e. paper, construction paper, tape/glue, scissors, colouring pencils or markers, and straws or popsicle sticks) try to draw and cut out the important stages of the butterfly (from egg to a beautiful butterfly) the fruits, and the types of food he ate. Attach your drawings to a straw or popsicle stick to become puppets.
After watching the video again, try to answer the following questions:
What happened at the beginning of the story?
What are the 4 stages the butterfly went through his life cycle?
What are the fruits and types of food he ate?
How did the story end?
Put on a puppet show with your puppets
Now you can retell the story. Have fun!
Use paper plates. Paint or colour them (green) with markers or pencil crayons. Then draw the pictures of the fruits and other foods (based on the number of the item the caterpillar is eating each day). Cut them out and glue them on the paper plates.Place them in a circle to represent the life-cycle of the butterfly.
Enjoy your art project!
