Our latest initiative aims to combat the challenges of living unhoused. The Milk Bag Initiative encourages students and staff to bring empty milk bags to school, and deposit them in the large cardboard milk carton located in the front foyer. Each bag collected will be part of a crocheted a sleeping mat, which will then be given out to people in need.

Winters in Toronto can be unforgiving, so JPCI CITY students created over 100 winter care kits for the homeless men and women of Toronto then donated them to an organization named Street Health. We were given the chance to learn more about different aspects of the homeless community, how they advocate for more affordable housing and help sort through over 1000 pairs of shoes for their annual 'shoe party'.
This also was in line with WE's "We will not rest" campaign.

Last year the JPCI CITY team decided to ease the settlement of newcomers and immigrants to Canada by starting the YYZ Inbound initiative. Since we had assumed a product-based business, our first step was to brainstorm our selling point. In our previous projects, we had sold various different products, ranging from bracelets and cups to locally harvested produce. This time, we had decided to dabble with apparel. Most of the teenage population within our school and community followed the latest trends in clothing so an apparel-based initiative was the best factor of developing a solid initiative. Our next step was to brainstorm the type of clothing and how it would look. We decided that t-shirts were the most versatile and desired product. We also wanted a simple, yet chic design that displayed a recognizable logo and also aspects of Toronto. Our designers came up with a brilliant YYZ imprint, that displayed the famous Toronto skyline within the letters. As expected, the shirts gained massive popularity and we completely sold two complete batches of orders. Our initiative was met with positive feedback from our community, the minister of immigration John McCallum, Mayor John Tory, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. This year we decided to continue the YYZ Inbound initiative by improving the quality of our t-shirts and releasing limited edition crew neck sweatshirts. Within less than a week we were able to sell out of our 50 crew neck sweatshirts. We are currently working on expanding our product line in order to meet the overwhelming demand for our products.

Malaria is a life-threatening disease that is rapidly spreading in regions without proper medical care and assistance. With over half a million deaths per year attributed to malaria, it has become an increasingly evident issue. While people like us enjoy the protection of an advanced healthcare system, many do not. Safety is a luxury under today’s conditions, so we must do our part in helping our global brothers and sisters. This fall the JPCI CITY team addressed this issue by participating in the Spread the Net Challenge through Plan International Canada. Over the course of a week we collected donations, and by the end of the week, we donated over 50 kits to malaria-infected regions. These kits contained insecticide-treated bed nets that were able to protect 2 people from malaria for up to 3 years. This initiative allowed us to raise money for a good cause and educate others about the dangers of malaria and the places it affects. This success inspired us to increase our goal to 100 kits.
