ELD vs. ESL

Greenwood offers English language instruction to students at a level suited to their prior English language skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening. As well, Greenwood offers more intensive literacy support in its ELD classes for students who did not have the opportunity to develop age-appropriate literacy skills in any language prior to coming to Canada.

ELD A/B

ELD stands for English Literacy Development. In the TDSB, ELDA and ELDB courses are part of the LEAP (Literacy Enrichment Academic Program) and are capped at 16 students per class. There is a greater emphasis on reading and writing skills and strategies.

ESL A/B/C/D/E

ESL stands for English as a Second Language. ESL courses provide English language instruction for students who have had consistent schooling prior to arriving in Canada and are adding English to their academic skills and knowledge. Beginners start in ESLA and students in ESLD and ESLE are preparing to study the regular English curriculum at their home schools or in an Edvance or Adult program.
