The U of T National Book Award

This award recognizes the strongest Canadian secondary school students, regardless of which university those students choose to attend. It is not necessary that the student intend to apply for admission to the University of Toronto. Award recipients receive a National Book Award recognizing their achievements, and as a symbol of their academic potential. It is a non-monetary award. The book will be presented to the winner at their secondary school graduation ceremony at the end of the school year.  Students nominated for this award are invited to submit an application to the National Scholarship Program (if they intend on attending U of T).

The University of Toronto Book Award is for students who demonstrate superior academic performance, original and creative thought, and exceptional achievement in a broad context; students who excel in academic pursuits, demonstrate enthusiasm for intellectual exploration and have a strong involvement in the lives of their schools and communities.

To win this award, you must be nominated by your school. To be considered, please email Mr. Oosterhoff by October 1st.

It's a difficult scholarship to win, but it's substantial, it's cool, and it's the first of the biggies. Check this page to see the criteria for eligibility.

The scholarship only can be used for one of 25 different universities (nine in Ontario), so make sure you are applying to one or more of those.

Check out some of the winners from past years here!

You do NOT need to be nominated by the school for this scholarship. It used to be needed, but not any more.

The deadline to apply is October 11th, 2023.

It does NOT require school nomination.

Deadline to apply is October 19th

Queen's Chancellor's Scholarship

(that's a lot of apostrophes)

Thinking of going to Queen's? They have lots of scholarships, but this one requires nomination by the school.  It's worth $36,000, so you can see why they don't hand it out so easily. The process to apply is complicated, but if you're interested in Queen's, you might also be interested in complicated.

To apply for that scholarship, you must be nominated by FHCI. If you would like to be considered for nomination, please email Mr. Oosterhoff by November 8th 2023 at the latest. This is before the deadline on their website, but we need to choose, and there are things the successful choice will need to do.

You must complete your OUAC application before applying for the scholarship, so do that first! Applying to the school must be completed by November 20th, 2023.

They will then give you access to the Queen's website to complete the scholarship application.

The scholarship application itself must be completed by December 8th.

The criteria and application process can be found here.

The TD Community Service award does NOT need a nomination by the school.

Deadline for application is November 15th, 2023.

This Scholarship focuses on students who have persevered through adversity and whose family experiences financial need.

It is extra-interesting because it is meant for current grade 11 students. The award will be applied the year you go to post-secondary (a year later, in most cases.)

The award is for up to $10,000. It does not require nomination from the school. You can find more information here.

Application opens on December 1st, 2023

Schulich Leader Scholarship

It's tied to a number of participating universities and programs. Check here to see if the schools and programs you're interested in are possible. In order to be eligible for this scholarship, you need to attend a school and study a program from this list.

They are looking for people interested in pursuing careers in STEM or applied research. It's not meant for people who are interested in becoming a doctor, environmentalist, or professor. See here for more details.

It needs nomination from the school. To apply for nomination, please email Mr. Oosterhoff.

Deadline to email Mr. Oosterhoff is January 19th, 2024

The deadline for the successful FHCI nominee to finish the application is February 20th, 2024; there's a lot of stuff to do to win a lot of money.
