The Dennis Waldman Foundation for Jewish Education is a non-profit educational charity that provides scholarships for Canadian students who are completing their secondary school education and going on to post-secondary study.
The Foundation was established in 1989 to honour the memory of Dennis Waldman, a beloved teacher in Toronto´s Jewish community, who died suddenly in June of 1989. His family and friends established a trust, formed a Board of Directors, and explored ways to remember Dennis by contributing to the education of young people in the Jewish community. The Dennis Waldman Scholarship is the result of that effort, and it has honoured his memory every year since 1990 until COVID-19 caused a two-year suspension of the scholarship.
In its first years, the scholarship prize was $1800. It has grown to a scholarship of $5000.
The process for awarding the Dennis Waldman Scholarship involves an application that includes a short essay. The application deadline is early May. The Board of Directors (a group of approximately ten people) carefully appraises the applications, meets, and determines three finalists for the scholarship. A smaller group of Board members subsequently interviews the finalists and awards the Dennis Waldman Scholarship to one of them. The prize money is forwarded to the winner on receipt of confirmation of enrolment from his or her post-secondary institution of choice.
We have moved our application to an online system. We are using the secure Google forms and docs for all application and files sent to the Dennis Waldman Foundation for Jewish Education. All submissions are to be done this way and documents must have your name included on the files. Please submit PDF files.

Not all awards will apply to all students. Students should create a profile on ScholarTree to get a customized list and weekly email reminders of deadlines. Students can use the "Applications Open" filter only to see those scholarships currently accepting applications at the top left of their scholarship list. As a reminder, ScholarTree has always been and will continue to be 100% free to students. We generate revenue by charging Scholarship Providers to host their scholarships on our site

It's a difficult scholarship to win, but it's substantial, it's cool, and it's the first of the biggies. Check this page to see the criteria for eligibility.
The scholarship only can be used for one of 25 different universities (nine in Ontario), so make sure you are applying to one or more of those.
Check out some of the winners from past years here!
You do NOT need to be nominated by the school for this scholarship. It used to be needed, but not any more.
The deadline to apply is: Thurs, Oct. 16, 2025, at noon ET.
Thinking of going to Queen's? They have lots of scholarships, but this one requires nomination by the school. It's worth $48,000, so you can see why they don't hand it out so easily. The process to apply is complicated, but if you're interested in Queen's, you might also be interested in complicated.
To apply for that scholarship, you must be nominated by FHCI. If you would like to be considered for nomination, please email Ms Reid by November 7th, 2025 This is well before the deadline on their website, but we need to choose, and there will be tasks that the nominee has to complete.
You must complete your OUAC application before applying for the scholarship, so don't skip that step! Applying to Queens on OUAC must be completed by November 20th, 2025 in order to be eligible for the scholarship.
If you are the school's nominee Queen's will then give you access to their website to complete the scholarship application.
They will inform you about timelines if you are the successful nominee of FHCI.
The TD Community Service award does NOT need a nomination by the school.
Deadline for application is October 22 2025.
This Scholarship focuses on students who have persevered through adversity and whose family experiences financial need.
It is extra-interesting because it is meant for current grade 11 students. The award will be applied the year you go to post-secondary (a year later, in most cases.)
The award is for up to $10,000. It does not require nomination from the school. You can find more information here.
Application opens TBD
It's tied to a number of participating universities and programs. Check here to see if the schools and programs you're interested in are possible. In order to be eligible for this scholarship, you need to attend a school and study a program from this list.
They are looking for people interested in pursuing careers in STEM or applied research. It's not meant for people who are interested in becoming a doctor, environmentalist, or professor. See here for more details.
This scholarship requires nomination from the school. To apply for nomination, please email Ms.Reid or Ms Ramundi by December 19, 2025.
Applications are due to Ms Ramundi or Ms Reid on January 6, 2026.
The deadline for the successful FHCI nominee to finish the application is February 18th, 2026; there's a lot of stuff to do to win a lot of money.
This is a collection of awards, all of which are centered around the same criteria which are listed on their website.
This one requires nomination, so if you are interested, you need to learn about this scholarship (there's lots of good info in the Applications and Other Documents section) and email Mr. Oosterhoff by February 1st.
