Can I take the PSW program in the evenings or part-time? Is online classes available?

Burnhamthorpe Adult Learning Centre is an adult day school. You must be available during school hours for the duration of the program. There are no part time or online classes available.

Can I get OSAP to qualify for this program? 

OSAP does not qualify for our program as it is not a post secondary institution. However, this also means there are no tuition fees! 

I already have a Vulnerable Sector Screening Check. Do I need to get a new one?

For this program, you need a Vulnerable Sector Screening Check that was completed within 6 months of starting your placement.

What curriculum does Burnhamthorpe follow?

Our program follows the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities; Personal Support Worker Program Standard (Aug 2021) as well as the PSW learning outcomes. Students in the program write a Provincial CESBA exam as a requirement of the PSW quality assurance process.

Can I do nursing after I finish the PSW program?

Yes you can! All post secondary institutions that have the nursing programs (RN or RPN), require applicants to have English, Math, and Science senior credits. BALC will conduct these assessments and can offer you credit bundles so you can earn these necessary credits to apply for the nursing program.


I need help with computer skills. Where can I get help with that?

The Essential Skills Upgrading (ESU) program provides free adult classes in Toronto to help learners improve their English reading and writing, mathematics, and computer skills. Our free adult classes are available at BALC! Full time, part time, day or evening classes are available. Contact information:

I want to get my Ontario High School Diploma after I take the PSW program. Can BALC help me do that?

Yes we can! In order to attain your Ontario High School Diploma (OSSD), you will need to earn 30 credits. By the time you finish the PSW program, you will already have nine. Our guidance department assists adult learners to access certain pathways that will help you achieve this, often in less time than it usually takes. As an adult learner, you have options!
