STARS

The STARS program's main goal is to provide opportunities for students to develop skills which allow them to become more confident and independent. This non-credit course is run over 2 consecutive periods and is structured to focus on two main areas: social skills development and personal life skills. With the support of a SET (Special Education Teacher), CYW (Child and Youth Care Worker and EA (Educational Assistant), STARS students are given a wide variety of opportunities within school and out in the community to further develop life skills that can be transferred into their post-secondary lives.

Some experiences include: partnering with Student Council to co-ordinate and run school events such as monthly Dress Down Days; developing entrepreneurial skills by organizing fundraisers such as Christmas "candy-grams;” developing team work, and organizational skills by meal planning and preparation. Throughout the year, students learn to navigate the TTC using the TTC app, reading maps, and exploring the city.

Veterans of the program have made noticeable improvements in their social, communication, and problem-solving skills - so much so that they continuously request to be enrolled in the program, year after year! The program has been successful because of the commitment of Educational Support Staff involved who strive to provide personalized programming for each student. The program is designed to challenge students to develop their fullest potential.
