The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) is a specialized 2-year program approved by the Ministry of Education and offered to students in grades 11 and 12. SHSM allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector while meeting the requirements of the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). These programs enable students to gain sector-specific skills and knowledge in engaging, career-related learning environments and prepare students in a focused way for graduation and postsecondary education, training or employment.
Father John Redmond is proud to offer SHSM programs in Health & Wellness and in Justice, Community Safety & Emergency Services (JCSES). Students interested in the Health & Wellness sector can explore careers in mainstream, complementary and alternative health care. Students interested in the JCSES sector can explore many career opportunities such as legal services, law enforcement, psychology, paramedic medical services, fire services, the military, etc.
The SHSM program can be tailored to any student regardless of their postsecondary pathway. With careful planning, SHSM can be taken in conjunction with other offered school programs (i.e. AP, IB, French Immersion, etc.).
