Opt-Out Information for eLearning Graduation Requirement
The Ministry of Education, through PPM 167, has mandated that students must earn two (2) eLearning credits to graduate from secondary school, beginning with students who entered Grade 9 in the 2020-2021* school year.
Asynchronous eLearning courses are courses delivered entirely using the internet and do not require students to be physically present with one another or with their educator, except where they may be needed for examinations and other final evaluations and other schoolbased supports (PPM 167).
To meet the criteria for this requirement, the course must be offered asynchronously (not delivered in real-time).
If a student is choosing to fulfill the online graduation requirement of two courses prior to graduation, no further action is required, other than to complete the courses.
Parents/Guardians may choose to opt-out of the mandatory eLearning courses required for graduation, on behalf of their child, any time prior to graduation.
The TCDSB offers a digital opt-out process at the time of option selection through My Blueprint. If a student is unable to complete the digital opt-out process through My Blueprint, a fillable Opt-Out form may be completed.
Regardless of whether opting out through My Blueprint or by using the TCDSB fillable form, the form will be placed in the student’s OSR (Ontario School Record) and will be recorded on the student’s transcript as “Online Learning Graduation Requirement - Non-Applicable”.
* Up to one secondary school credit that was completed by students who were in Grade 9 during the province wide school closures from April 2021-June 2021 may be counted towards the graduation requirement, in recognition of the extraordinary circumstances of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Credits that DO NOT count towards the online learning graduation requirement include those earned through:
• in-person learning, in which students are physically present with other students in the same course and their educator in the school environment.
• blended learning, in which digital learning resources are used in an in-person learning setting, or in which students are taught part of the time in person in the school environment and part of the time online.
• flipped classrooms, a type of blended learning in which students are introduced to content online and practice working through it in person with their educator in the school environment.
• remote learning, characterized by minimum synchronous learning requirements, among other requirements as defined in Policy/Program Memorandum 164.
Please note:
• Courses taken through St. Anne Catholic Academy, School of Virtual Learning, and other courses that are offered synchronously (in real-time) do not meet this graduation requirement.
• Asynchronous eLearning courses that fit the criteria for this graduation requirement will be offered by the TCDSB through summer school (eClass sessions 1 or 2), night school (eClass) and through Day eLearning.
