Mini-Unit
4-Lesson Unit
This page contains the shortened version of the Coming Together Through Stories Unit that is made up of four lessons and can be used as a mini-unit for teachers who want to address some of the recent events with their students now but may not have time to implement the whole unit. The relevant lesson plans and documents can be found below each lesson heading. Each lesson plan include synchronous and asynchronous options for implementation when possible as well as the relevant learning standards and suggestions for differentiation.
These lessons are modifications of the first two and last two lessons from the longer unit. As such, they focus more on the social and emotional learning components than the oral history components related to elder knowledge that are central to the longer unit.
Lesson 1: Six-Word Memoirs
This lesson will provide students with an opportunity to check in with themselves and one another about how they are doing. Students will then be supported in writing six-word memoirs to share about how they are feeling and coping during this time.

Lesson 2: Coping and Resilience
This lesson will encourage students to consider how we cope with negative feelings or challenging times as a way to transition students into understanding how we can address some of the feelings discussed in the previous lesson. It will also introduce the idea of building a “toolbox of resilience” in order to cope with challenging times.
