REPORT

INTRO: My ancestor, Kupe Nuku immigrated from Hawaiki (also known as Hawaii) to New Zealand. My ancestor Immigrated to New Zealand because his fishing bait was being eaten by an 18 metre long octopus. This octopus belonged to one of Kupe enemies Muturangi who led Kupe to New Zealand. This inquiry focuses on why Kupe decided to leave his home land and start a new life in a land where no one else has set foot on.

PUSH FACTOR #1:

After realizing that a giant octopus belonging to Muturangi was stealing their bait, Kupe set out to kill the great beast who led them all the way from Hawaii to New Zealand thats 7,391 at the shortest distance then chasing the octopus around the whole of New Zealand

Then finally killing the great octopus.

PUSH FACTOR #2:

Another problem was that his home land Hawaiki was being over populated. He decided to move to New Zealand and also because it was an unoccupied land, not ruled by any government and a place to start a new life.

DISCUSSION OF PUSH FACTORS:

When arriving to the unclaimed country, Hine-te-Aparangi (Kupe’s wife) named the great land ‘Ao-tea-roa,’ meaning ‘The Long White Cloud’. Once The Giant Wheke was slain, Kupe landed his waka (Matawhaorua) in a bay he named Hokianga Harbour which means ‘The Returning Place’, and when returning to Hawaiki Kupe re-named his waka from ‘Matawhaorua’ to ‘Ngatokimatawhaorua’.

PULL FACTOR #1

When Kupe and all aboard the waka, landed in New Zealand they came across abundance of food like fishing spots, fresh fruit trees and patches of divine looking vegetables. These are very good reasons why Kupe found Aotearoa a promising place to set up home for him and his iwi.

PULL FACTOR #2

Kupe explored and found animals, forests, and good places to set up a whanau. All this attracted Kupe. This is what caught Kupes attention and pulled him to live in New Zealand. The forests helped them build waka, traps, weapons, whares, tools for everyday life, harakeke (flax) was another resource for making ropes (taura) and baskets (kete) .Animals like birds, eels, small rodents, Moa, not only provided food but provided them with clothes e.g korowai.

DISCUSSION OF PULL FACTORS

When Kupe and all aboard the waka, landed in New Zealand they came across abundance of food like fishing spots and fresh fruit and vegetables, native animals, forests, and a good place to set up a whanau. All this Attracted Kupe this is what caught Kupes attention and pulled him to live in New Zealand.

CONCLUSION

My ancestor’s name was Kupe Nuku, he found Aotearoa through one of his enemies Muturangi. Muturangi was the one who sent the great octopus to steal all of Kupe’s fish and bait. After Kupe asked Muturangi multiple times to Muturangi to tell his octopus to stop Kupe set out to kill Muturangi's pet. As hours became days and days became months the octopus brang Kupe to a land that has not been set foot on, and that is where Hine-te-Aparangi named the land ‘Ao-tea-roa,’ ‘The Long White Cloud’. Kupe chased the octopus around Aotearoa, until finally slaying the great beast. Kupe was attracted to the forests, native animals, fishing spots, fresh fruit and vegetables and decided to live in the new land AOTEAROA so he made his way all the way back to Hawaiki to tell the story.
