๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ | TAU holds training on policy formulation to better governance, accountability
In a proactive move to strengthen its operational framework, Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU), through its Gender and Development (GAD) Office, conducted a two-day comprehensive training program focused on GAD-Sensitive Policy Formulation at the University's Continuing Education Center (CEC) Bldg., 19 and 20 September.
The training workshop, initiated by Dr. Ma. Theresa B. Nardo, TAU-GAD Director, aimed to guarantee that university policies are gender-sensitive and responsive to effectively address the diverse requirements of its stakeholders, in addition to adhering to government standards.
TAU President Dr. Silverio Ramon DC. Salunson stated in his introductory speech that the goal of the university is to "provide a secure environment for all individuals.โ The President further explained that such a goal calls for more than merely denouncing violence and also entails taking proactive steps to stop it and assist those who are affected.
โOur processes and policies are intended to ensure a campus atmosphere free from exploitation and terror for all persons," he said.
With this goal, he urged the training participants to remain "supportive of gender equality and inclusivity as we go forward with our GAD-sensitive policies, and stay dedicated to these fundamental principles."
"We can create a world where everyone is respected, cherished, and given the opportunity to realize their full potential by working together," he added.
In an overview, Ms. Emily Anne Aquino, GAD Coordinator from the TAU-College of Education (CEd), explained that the University, which is governed by approved policies and guidelines in accordance with established rules and protocols issued by government agencies such as the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the Department of Budget and Management (DBM), and the Civil Service Commission (CSC), recognizes the importance of adhering to policies in carrying out its duties and responsibilities. The University's policies, which are applied as internal procedures or protocols, provide a transparent framework for decision-making and the attainment of logical conclusions.
โAdhering to these regulatory entities is not just a requirement by law, but is crucial in upholding the university's operational integrity. Despite this, evaluations have revealed gaps in the universityโs policy documentation, raising concerns among external evaluators and partner institutions,โ she said.
This has prompted the University-GAD Office to propose a training program to ensure that the University's existing policies remain relevant, gender-sensitive, and responsive to the needs of students, faculty, and the wider community.
The training program aimed to recalibrate the existing policies along the present mandates of the University; formulate policies that govern the programs and activities of each unit at TAU; establish competencies on all the programs, activities, and projects of the different units of the University that are governed by policies for implementation, evaluation and monitoring; and ensure commitment among stakeholders in carrying out the mandate of the University through proactive policies and procedures anchored on a gender-sensitive and responsive framework.
Furthermore, the training is expected to reassess and update current policies to match TAUโs existing mandates; create new policies suited to the needs of different departments at TAU; set clear standards for carrying out, assessing, and overseeing these policies; and encourage all involved parties to support the university's mission by actively participating in policy development.
Dr. Joseph Guinto Navarro of National College of Public Administration and Governance at University of the Philippines in Diliman (UP-Diliman NCPAG) and Atty. Mildred Fernandez Ople of Ople Law Office served as the resource speakers during the training.
Topics discussed include basic concepts on policy writing, opportunities, possibilities and challenges in identifying legal sources to support the policies to be crafted.ย Workshops covered detailed discussions on creating policies and guidelines that consider gender issues and sustainable development in every department of the University to promote uniformity in decision-making and develop a peaceful work atmosphere.
TAU recognizes the significance of implementing clear policies to ensure its activities adhere to established rules and procedures, and to promote accountability and transparency in engaging with stakeholders. Through this GAD-Sensitive Policy Formulation Training, the University manifests its continuous commitment to guaranteeing that its policies are gender-sensitive and responsive to the needs of its clients.

Serving the public means going the extra mile despite the limits and challenges of a rapidly changing world.
We continue to witness public servants making sacrifices for the greater good of Filipinos: rescuers losing their lives in the line of duty during calamities; teachers crossing rivers and traversing forests and mountains just to reach schools in peripheral communities; and medical workers risking their lives to save others.
These acts may seem extraordinary, but to an honest and compassionate government employee, they are just part of the routine- a reality many choose to face without an iota of doubt.
The whole TAU community salutes every public servant who serves with honor, integrity, fairness, dedication, truthfulness, and competence, while remaining true to the pledge sworn and renewed every single day: โtutugon ako sa mga hamon ng makabagong panahon tungo sa adhikain ng matatag, maginhawa, at panatag na buhay..โ

Long weekend ahead, TAUians!
As we honor the life and legacy of Senator Benigno โNinoyโ Aquino, Jr., the Malacaรฑang Palace, per Proclamation No. 665, declares 23 August (Friday) a special non-working holiday throughout the country.
Said proclamation aims to provide longer rest for employees and promote domestic tourism, as long as the historical significance of Ninoy Aquino Day is observed. Hence, the holiday originally set every August 21st of the year has been moved to Friday, 23 August.
As we remember the 41st death anniversary of Sen. Ninoy, please note that Monday, 26 August, is also a holiday in celebration of โNational Heroes Dayโ per Proclamation No. 368. Let us continue to honor the courage, selflessness, and patriotism of the country's heroes, especially those whose names are lost in the annals of history, who fought for freedom and self-determination.
With this long weekend ahead, we, at the Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU), join the country as we offer respect and celebrate nationhood for the heroes who have fought for our countryโs independence and democracy. TAU will resume office transactions on Tuesday, 27 August..

๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ | CBM-based student orgs tagged as among Best UNESCO Clubs for 2024
The Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU), particularly the College of Business and Management (CBM), has recently attested its commitment to providing its students with prime opportunities to become capable and confident leaders who can make positive contributions in their communities as three of its registered student organizations were chosen as among the Outstanding Clubs of United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for 2024, announced via National Coordinating Body of UNESCO Clubs in the Philippines (NCBUCP), Inc.'s official Facebook page, 30 July.
Accordingly, out of 250 accredited Clubs for UNESCO for 2023, the NCBUCP Awards Committee has unanimously approved the recognition of the Junior Marketing Society (JMS) as an Outstanding Club for UNESCO for 2024 College Level - Information and Communication Category, while The Executives, and the Young Entrepreneurs' Society (YES) were named Outstanding Clubs for UNESCO for 2024 College Level both under Social and Human Science Category "for [their] commitment to excellence [that] has been duly recognized based on [their] programs and projects implemented from [January 2023 to May 2024] in pursuit of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)."
The JMS is headed by its president Mr. Erwin Manansala, and guided by the club adviser, Dr. Jerome D. Soriano, while The Executives and YES are led by Mr. Kym Angelo Felix, and Ms. Bella Ellen Felix, respectively, under the tutelage of Ms. Shiyeahna I. Labonete and Ms. Kimberly Pascasio Robillos.
In an online interview, Mr. Manansala said he is "extremely proud and fulfilled by our accomplishment."
"It was a difficult journey that needed a lot of effort, dedication, and perseverance. This success has not only aided my personal and professional development, but it has also inspired me to establish and pursue even greater objectives in the future," he said.
As for Ms. Felix, the YES club members were surprised and overwhelmed to be officially awarded as an Outstanding UNESCO Club for 2024.
"As much as we believe in ourselves, we never expected to be one of the Outstanding UNESCO Clubs for 2024. Most of us are still in the process of molding our leadership skills and continuously seeking to address our weaknesses," she admitted.
On the other hand, The Executives were honored and grateful for the accomplishment and opportunity to be recognized among different clubs and organizations, and they merit recognition to the Financial Management Department of CBM, and to the entire TAU community.
"The University honed the illustrious student-organizations in bridging the gap towards the achievement of SDGs through educational, social, cultural, and environmental activities enticing the students to contribute and to take action," Mr. Felix claimed.
The clubs' presidents were one in attributing their success to their club members who worked tirelessly for their projects' accomplishments, to their supportive advisers, to the CBM and TAU community, to their parents and loved ones, and to the Divine Almighty.
They also commit to continue creating and partaking in different activities that will champion and adhere to TAU and UNESCOโs ideals and mission in building sustainable communities.
Meanwhile, Dr. Erlie SD. Totaan, the CBM Dean, expressed her extreme pride and excitement for the clubs' selection by UNESCO as among the best student organizations.
"By this recognition, UNESCO has simply confirmed that these awards are a reflection of your hard work, creativity and commitment to quality. Your efforts and leadership have transformed our College into an influential institution that others want to emulate," she said.
This year's Search for The Outstanding Club for UNESCO aimed to recognize and campaign for the achievements and advocacies of the varied accredited UNESCO clubs whose endeavors are aligned with the ideals and thrusts of UNESCO in each of the following categories: (1) Education, (2) Information and Communication, (3) Science and Technology, (4) Culture, and (5) Social and Human Sciences.
Winners of this year's search are reminded to make sure to attend the International Assembly of Youth for UNESCO (Y4U) with the theme โEmpowering Communities through UNESCO Initiatives: Advancing Science and Technology, Culture, Creativity and Lifelong Learningโ on 29 November 2024- 1 December 2024 to be held in City State Asturias Hotel, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ | TAU's BSDevCom grad bags award in 'Bagong Pilipinas' writing tilt
A deep sense of pride in Filipino history and a desire to see a better future for the Philippines prompted Mr. Kenedy De Guzman Agustin, a Bachelor of Science in Development Communication (BSDevCom) cum laude graduate from the Tarlac Agricultural University's College of Arts and Sciences (TAU-CAS), to write what he felt about the current challenges the country is facing, and proposed solutions that could lead to a more inclusive, just, and sustainable society.
His heart-rending piece titled "Haraya: A Vision of Hope for Bagong Pilipinas" landed a winning spot at the Presidential Communications Office (PCO)-sponsored nationwide essay-writing contest anchored in the โBagong Pilipinasโ campaign of the administration.
Organized in November last year for enrolled college students in the country, the contest sought articles that would best feature "the Filipino youthโs aspirations for a Bagong Pilipinas, or the inspirational spirit that will enable this call-to-action realization, among many other narratives the writer wants to communicate."
In an online interview, the 22-year-old native of Mangatarem, Pangasinan revealed that he joined the contest because he wanted "to voice my vision for a better Philippines and engage with others who share similar aspirations. It was a platform to advocate for meaningful change and inspire others to envision a brighter future together."
His piece envisions a "Bagong Pilipinas" that honors Filipino historical legacy, promotes inclusivity and social justice, reforms education to foster critical thinking, drives economic and social progress, and emphasizes environmental sustainability.
"It calls for collective effort and dedication to build a brighter future for all Filipinos," Agustin added.
When asked what inspired him to write his winning article, Mr. Agustin disclosed that from a tender age, he was fueled by an unwavering passion and determination which has led him to an unrelenting pursuit of exploration and comprehension of the world around him.
"This tenacious dedication drives my commitment to contributing positively to our society, striving to create a future where inclusivity, justice, and sustainability are not just ideals but realities for all Filipinos," he said.
Ken, as he is fondly called by his peers, began his journey in journalism during his elementary days, where he developed a passion for storytelling and reporting. Throughout high school, he focused on science writing, exploring topics that captivated his interest. However, during Senior High School, he shifted his focus to other endeavors, temporarily stepping away from journalism to pursue different endeavors.
But he just can't get away from writing, and winning. Prior to this award from PCO, he earned second place in AVISOC, the largest Southeast Asian student competition, as his entry was recognized in the category of Issues in Digital Literacy and Information, highlighting his dedication to exploring and addressing contemporary challenges in this field.
He admitted that he felt overwhelmed with joy and gratitude when he received on 10 July the notification that he was among the winners of the said national writing contest. "I attribute my success to God, whose guidance has been my anchor. To my parents, I am incredibly thankful for their unwavering support and belief in me and to Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU), I am grateful for the opportunities and education that have shaped my journey toward this achievement," Mr. Agustin said.
According to Mr. Agustin, per email from PCO, the winning entries for the "Bagong Pilipinas" essay-writing contest will be formally announced and recognized with their respective rankings tentatively on 24 July in Manila.
