๐Œ๐ˆ๐‹๐„๐’๐“๐Ž๐๐„๐’ | Envisioning the Universityโ€™s futures

ย ย ย ย DAP capacitates TAU leaders on anticipatory governance

Highlighting the role of foresight and futures thinking in strategic visioning and risk management and resilience, the Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) Administrative Council (AdCo) participated in a Training on Strategic Foresight and Scenario-Based Planning in partnership with the Development Academy of the Philippines (DAP) Center for Governance - Operations Management Office at Subic Bay Venezia Hotel, Subic Bay Freeport Zone, on 9 - 12 October.

Despite his full itinerary, TAU President Dr. Silverio Ramon DC. Salunson stayed for the crucial periods and witnessed the bottom-up planning and collaborative ideation of AdCo members, facilitated by Dir. Alvin P. Principe and Ms. Merriam P. Dy.

โ€œThis training will give our middle managers and senior leaders useful strategies and insightful information and open fresh possibilities, reminding us that we may not be able to actively design the future but we can prepare for whatever that is imminent,โ€ Dr. Salunson shared during the opening ceremony.

The University Executive also stressed how the training came at such an opportune time as TAU works to overcome institutional challenges and turn them into opportunities for growth and innovation.

Organized by the TAU Office of the Vice President for Planning and Quality Assurance (OVPPQA), the eight-session event included lectures and workshops from scenario framing up to the determining of indicators and signposts for the first three days. For the final stretch, the four groups, each led by a TAU vice president, presented their scenario plans exploring various themes and versions of futures.

Dr. Leonell P. Lijauco, VPPQA, said that TAU needs to prepare for futures to โ€œremain relevant, competitive, and resilient.โ€ Further capitalizing on TAUโ€™s primary functions as an educational and research institution, Dr. Lijauco underscored how TAUโ€™s anticipatory governance should look forward and respond to global trends such as evolving educational demands, shifts in agricultural practices, environmental challenges, and technological advancements.

Furthermore, Dr. Arnold R. Lorenzo, Vice President for Finance and Administration (VPFA), presented the collective takeaways from the TAU participants after he and his fellow VPs coined the acronym STIR:ย  Strategic, Transformative, Innovative, and Relevant interventions which must be reflected in TAUโ€™s 10-year roadmap.

The next training, which will dwell on deepening components, will be held in Bani, Pangasinan on 21-22 November.ย  Said program will have five more sessions thereafter culminating on 12 February 2025 for the final validation.

Laughter and cheers echo in the air as the rope is tugged in opposite directions, with both contending teams pulling back and forth with all of their might. As teammates-turned-fans scream their hearts out, encouraging their specific teams with chants and cheers, the tug-of-war becomes a metaphor for the daily tasks that employees face in their respective offices, where success is typically determined by pulling together and supporting one another while fostering the camaraderie and collaborative spirit that defines the TAU workplace culture.

In the end, it all boils down not to which team pulled the most of the rope, but it becomes about the experience and the friendships created through that friendly rivalry. The event ends with smiles everywhere because participants and spectators alike enjoy the happiness of being together for some fun and friendly competition, grass-stained knees and elbows, and the understanding that teamwork goes far beyond the TAU office walls.

The entire Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) community joins the whole nation in sending warmest felicitations to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on the occasion of its 57th anniversary.

For almost six decades, ASEAN has been a symbol of regional cooperation and development. This year's theme, "ASEAN: Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience," demonstrates the unity and resiliency that have characterized this noble organization since its very formation.

ASEAN remains committed to sustainable development in the relentless pursuit of a global standard. Its rich tapestry of cultures is well supported by dynamic exchange programs that draw mutual understanding and respect between member nations. Moreover, the economic cooperation initiatives of ASEAN have cleared the way for a robust marketplace, leading to growth and prosperity across Southeast Asia.

In the modern world of many challenges at every level, the concern of ASEAN still remains regional security. However, because of diplomatic efforts that transcend oceans and continents, ASEAN is inching closer towards becoming a major force in shaping the global community.

As this milestone is celebrated, TAU looks forward to ASEAN's continued progress towards deeper regional integration. Such a vision of a more connected Southeast Asia will promise new opportunities and the strengthening of resilience in the region against challenges in the years to come.

As TAU reiterates its continued commitment to the ideals and spirits binding ASEAN, it stands proud to continue and forge cooperation from the various member-states across the spectrum, working hand in hand for a brighter, more prosperous future within Southeast Asia and beyond.

Hence, TAU invites its stakeholders to attend the virtual kickoff on 29 August at 9:00 AM GMT+8. You may reserve your slots by registering through this link: ย https://bit.ly/ASEAN57th.

This is a significant milestone in TAUโ€™s plan to establish its own IP center that will ignite new hope to the lives of the indigenous people in Tarlac Province. This initiative of creating an IP Center at TAU resonates deeply with the Commission on Higher Education's (CHED) heed for universities "to foster understanding and appreciation of IP culture."

Dr. Vilma B. Ramos, who heads NEUST-ReCIPE, welcomes the TAU representatives and shares her experiences while at the same time showing support as she recognizes great potential in what TAU has started.

Moreover, the TAU-CAS team also pays a visit to Dr. Donato B. Bumacas, DMO V, Provincial Officer of Nueva Ecija for National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) who emphasizes the crucial role of academic institutions in bridging the gap between traditional knowledge and modern education.

On returning home, the team, headed by Dr. Sherwin S. Alar, TAU-CAS dean, immediately begins preparing activities and projects that would bring about the TAU IP Center to life and integrate indigenous education into its curricula.

๐‚๐‡๐‘๐Ž๐๐ˆ๐‚๐‹๐„๐’ | TAU promotes technologies, services in Tarlac BizConEx 2024

Showcasing the various technologies generated through its research and partnership initiatives, the Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU), through its Business Auxiliary Services (BAS) and Department of Extension and Training (DET), took part in this year's Business, Conference, and Expo (BizConEx 2024) at Bulwagang Kanlahi, Diwa ng Tarlak Convention Center, Tarlac City on 30-31 July.

The two-day event, which was spearheaded by the Tarlac Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise Development Council (Tarlac SMEDC), aimed to develop and strengthen micro, small, and medium enterprises through advocating mentorship, money, and market.

Immediately followed by a ceremonial opening, a customary program graced by Hon. Paolo Benigno "Bam" Aquino IV, former Senator of the Republic and the principal author of Go Negosyo Act, who served as keynote speaker, commenced the event. Other dignitaries present include Ms. Aileen U. Chan, president of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry-Tarlac (PCCI Tarlac) and chairperson of Tarlac MSMEDC; Dir. Edna D. Dizon, OIC-Regional Director of Department of Trade and Industry (DTI-3) and chair of the Regional MSMEDC; Usec. Ma. Cristina A. Roque from the MSME Development Group of DTI; Ms. Cristina C. Tuzon, Regional Governor of PCCI North Luzon and co-chair of the Regional MSMEDC; Atty. Maria Amalia T. Cayanan, Area Vice President of PCCI North Luzon; Consul Enunina V. Mangio, president of PCCI National; and Hon. Susan A. Yap, Governor of Tarlac Province and co-chair of Tarlac MSMEDC.

The afternoon of the first day was devoted to an orientation on fair trade law, PCCI general membership meeting, and employer's forum where topics such as labor updates, SSS benefit and pension booster, Philhealth updates, and Provident Savings and loan programs were discussed.

The second day started with a one-hour digital financial literacy seminar, which was followed by a product development and innovation forum.ย  During the said forum, Dr. Jay-Ar A. De Mayo, TAU's Director for BAS, talked about the various technologies generated by TAU that are available for adoption, which include engineered bamboo products, sweetpotato clean planting materials, sweetpotato-based food products, off-season tomato, free-range chicken, among others.ย

Dr. De Mayo also showcased the other technologies and technical services offered by the University through its DET, Rootcrops Research and Training Center (RRTC), and the Food Technology Department.ย  TAU food products and e-bamboo items were likewise exhibited via a makeshift booth for additional publicity.

According to the TAU-BAS Director,ย  generated technologies by state colleges and universities serve their purpose when utilized by the community for the betterment of quality of life and when commercialized to thrive the businesses, and so, events such as BizConEx are great avenues to introduce TAU products to improve their market reach.

"BizConex is a valuable platform to promote TAU technologies and connect with potential investors, forge new collaborations, and contribute to the establishment of more businesses in the province of Tarlac and better livelihood opportunities among its people," he said.

Other highlights of Day 2 include the sharing of success stories by the beneficiaries of livelihood/cash incentives from PCCI Tarlac; Barista Training by Chef King Paul B. Gabertan of the Supreme School of Culinary Arts and Technology, Inc.; and the awarding of vlogging contest winners.

Launched just last year, Tarlac BizConEx focuses on effecting substantial improvements in the business landscape for SMSMEs in the province through product development, operations, regulatory compliance, and networking opportunities.

๐‚๐‡๐‘๐Ž๐๐ˆ๐‚๐‹๐„๐’ | TAU's BSDevCom grad bags award in 'Bagong Pilipinas' writing tilt

A deep sense of pride in Filipino history and a desire to see a better future for the Philippines prompted Mr. Kenedy De Guzman Agustin, a Bachelor of Science in Development Communication (BSDevCom) cum laude graduate from the Tarlac Agricultural University's College of Arts and Sciences (TAU-CAS), to write what he felt about the current challenges the country is facing, and proposed solutions that could lead to a more inclusive, just, and sustainable society.

His heart-rending piece titled "Haraya: A Vision of Hope for Bagong Pilipinas" landed a winning spot at the Presidential Communications Office (PCO)-sponsored nationwide essay-writing contest anchored in the โ€œBagong Pilipinasโ€ campaign of the administration.

Organized in November last year for enrolled college students in the country, the contest sought articles that would best feature "the Filipino youthโ€™s aspirations for a Bagong Pilipinas, or the inspirational spirit that will enable this call-to-action realization, among many other narratives the writer wants to communicate."

In an online interview, the 22-year-old native of Mangatarem, Pangasinan revealed that he joined the contest because he wanted "to voice my vision for a better Philippines and engage with others who share similar aspirations. It was a platform to advocate for meaningful change and inspire others to envision a brighter future together."

His piece envisions a "Bagong Pilipinas" that honors Filipino historical legacy, promotes inclusivity and social justice, reforms education to foster critical thinking, drives economic and social progress, and emphasizes environmental sustainability.

"It calls for collective effort and dedication to build a brighter future for all Filipinos," Agustin added.

When asked what inspired him to write his winning article, Mr. Agustin disclosed that from a tender age, he was fueled by an unwavering passion and determination which has led him to an unrelenting pursuit of exploration and comprehension of the world around him.

"This tenacious dedication drives my commitment to contributing positively to our society, striving to create a future where inclusivity, justice, and sustainability are not just ideals but realities for all Filipinos," he said.

Ken, as he is fondly called by his peers, began his journey in journalism during his elementary days, where he developed a passion for storytelling and reporting. Throughout high school, he focused on science writing, exploring topics that captivated his interest. However, during Senior High School, he shifted his focus to other endeavors, temporarily stepping away from journalism to pursue different endeavors.

But he just can't get away from writing, and winning. Prior to this award from PCO, he earned second place in AVISOC, the largest Southeast Asian student competition, as his entry was recognized in the category of Issues in Digital Literacy and Information, highlighting his dedication to exploring and addressing contemporary challenges in this field.

He admitted that he felt overwhelmed with joy and gratitude when he received on 10 July the notification that he was among the winners of the said national writing contest. "I attribute my success to God, whose guidance has been my anchor. To my parents, I am incredibly thankful for their unwavering support and belief in me and to Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU), I am grateful for the opportunities and education that have shaped my journey toward this achievement," Mr. Agustin said.

According to Mr. Agustin, per email from PCO, the winning entries for the "Bagong Pilipinas" essay-writing contest will be formally announced and recognized with their respective rankings tentatively on 24 July in Manila.

TAU employees join mid-year festival in Isabela Province

Led by Tarlac Agricultural University (TAU) President, Dr. Silverio Ramon DC. Salunson, the 125-strong TAU delegation gathered for the Sociocultural and Sports Mid-year Festival at Isabela State University (ISU) in Echague, Isabela from 1-5 July.

The annual assembly of faculty and non-teaching staff from state universities and colleges (SUCs) north of Metro Manila, steered by the Association of State Colleges and Universities - Solid North (ASCU-SN), showcased friendly games and competitions, celebrating the distinct heritage of Northern and Central Luzon provinces, and fostering the advancement of sports culture and promotion of health and wellness among SUC workers.

Proving their unparalleled skills, TAUian athletes earned first-place finishes in several categories. Ms. Rizafel B. Salcedo and Ms. Jenah B. Sotero outmaneuvered their opponents in the Table Tennis Doubles Women (40 Above), while Mr. Angelo P. Guillermo aced his games and captured the top spot in Table Tennis Men (39 Below). Dr. Joven D. Valdez and Engr. John Leonard M. Constantino also triumphed in their respective divisions in lawn tennis. In addition, Mr. Danilo F. Dela Cruz proved his dominance in Shot Put Men (46 Above).

Dr. Emerson B. Cuzzamu, OIC Director of the Sports Development Office, attributed these victories to the playersโ€™ commitment and discipline. โ€œWith consistent practice and support from the TAU administration, our athletes will surely secure more recognition in the future editions of ASCU-SN,โ€ Dr. Cuzzamu said. To ensure that the University continues to produce top-caliber athletes, Dr. Cuzzamu shared that his office is looking into the possible implementation of long-term sports development programs tailored for TAU employees.

The TAU artists were also all-out in their campaign to bring home the coveted trophy in the Retro Dance Craze contest. Fueled by their passion for dance, 16 performers impressed both judges and audience in their much-applauded interpretation of 60s, 70s, and 80s music and trends.

โ€œI want to congratulate our team for the hard work and painstaking efforts we exerted,โ€ Ms. Grace Kelly G. Dela Cruz, team member, shared. Furthermore, Ms. Cecile L. Lapitan, OIC Director of Sociocultural Development Office, commended the group members for their sacrifices during the preparations. โ€œWe are thrilled with this award. Our team did not give up even if we were up against more prominent teams from established names in performing arts,โ€ Ms. Lapitan remarked.

Meanwhile, Dr. Salunson also took his oath as the new Vice President of ASCU-SN after being elected by his fellow presidents during the board meeting on 2 July. โ€œTAU will always be an active partner of ASCU-SN-member SUCs as we advocate for collaboration, not competition,โ€ Dr. Salunson mentioned during the opening ceremony, acknowledging the value of synergy in collective actions.

Meanwhile, the Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) in Ilocos Norte will host the assembly next year.
