Overview
As the line between online and offline continues to blur, students reflect on how they can use intrapersonal and interpersonal skills to build and strengthen positive online communication and communities. They will explore common digital stressors and their influences on relationships. Students will also gain an understanding of how to communicate effectively online and how and why some topics and conversations can best lend themselves to certain mediums.
Our Instructional Approach
Beyond Online Predators
The term "online predator" often conjures up the image of a creepy older man at a computer screen waiting to lure an unsuspecting child. The media reinforces this depiction, which is problematic because it does not fit with the kinds of risky relationships that are more common for kids and teens. In reality, when online sexual solicitation does occur, it's more likely to be between two teens or between a teen and a young adult. Students will need support getting clarity on this misconception and with distinguishing myth from reality when it comes to online sexual solicitation.
Boundaries
Through real-life scenarios and first-person testimonials, students get a chance to practice setting boundaries they're comfortable with. From sexting to grooming to controlling, students learn about the potentially unhealthy behaviors that can result from online relationships.
As you teach good digital citizenship skills to your students, highlight the social emotional and well-being principles which go along with each concept.

Digital Citizenship newsletters are a quick reference guide for suggested lessons. Common Sense Media drives our TPSS Digital Citizenship curriculum, with the additional resources of Google's "Be Internet Awesome" and Typing Agent's Digital Citizenship lessons. Teachers should document digital citizenship lessons in their lesson plans and are required to turn in the Digital Citizenship Teacher Documentation Form at the end of the year.

Digital etiquette, or netiquette as it is sometimes called, is a basic set of rules you should follow to make the Internet a better place for yourself and for others. Just as there are rules of etiquette in real life, face-to-face encounters, there are also rules you should follow while online.
How do you practice good digital etiquette? It's easier than you might think. Simply treat others as you would like to be treated, with courtesy and respect. It is also important to know your audience and to communicate accordingly.

The rules of digital etiquette vary depending upon the particular technology you are using; however, in general, there are several core principles that apply regardless of the technology being used.
Kent State University identifies nine, which are listed below. You can read more about each rule by clicking here.
1. Avoid language that may come across as strong or offensive.
2. Keep writing to a point and stay on topic.
3. Read first, write later.
4. Review, review, then send.
5. Remember that an online classroom is still a classroom.
6. Know the language of the Internet.
7. Consider the privacy of others.
8. If possible, keep attachments small.
9. Do not send, forward, or post inappropriate material.
