The Texas A&M University Cyclotron Institute, with support from the WoodNext Foundation, will host a working-group meeting on X-ray burst physics immediately following the CeNAM Frontiers Meeting 2026. The goal of this workshop is to take a strategic look at the past and coming decades of X-ray burst science. Properly constraining X-ray bursts requires input from astronomical observation, astrophysical models and both experimental and theoretical nuclear physics. The strong interplay between these angles of investigation requires sustained coordination to maximise the value and validity of our efforts. The main purpose of this meeting is to refresh and strengthen our research partnerships and to identify concrete efforts to bridge our work together, enabling a free flow of data, developments and ideas from one sub-area into another.
Since our focus is the future, we want to be forward-focused. When past work is reviewed, it should be discussed with an eye to how this success can be built upon to make progress in the near future, e.g. if a successful experimental technique could be applied to new directions or if old model-observation comparisons could be applied to a new system. Our pla is t ask a few work workshop participants to give a talk on each area and then to have a panel discussion on the path forward. We will also include breakout sessions for smaller groups to develop concrete plans and actionable next steps.
