Item 1: Review of 335 post cruise evaluations
Nothing specifically related to the Curation group.
Peter Blum raised an issue (in a note to the group) encountered on Exp. 335 while logging junk basket material in SampleMaster. The following questions resulted:
1. How do we want to log this material?
2. Exp. 335 came up with a solution on the fly. Is this acceptable?
Action: It was recommended that a working group be formed to deal with the issue.
Item 2: Implementation of LWG recommendation on piece length measurements, and how it relates to the data collected on Exp 335
There is a discrepancy between how piece length was measured on Exp. 335, and the recommendation of the Curation LWG. Historically piece length was measured down the center of the archive half. On Exp. 335 the length of the whole round piece was measured, essentially the same measurement as Bin Length.
Action: The group saw no reason to rescind its earlier recommendations regarding piece length measurement, which should be adopted on future expeditions. The hard rock “community” could be polled to get their consensus on the matter.
Item 3: Currently Don Sims, as the database contact, is fielding a lot of questions relating to the access of data from Exps. not stored in LIMS or JANUS. Apparently people are finding it difficult to access to, or be directed towards, JCORES and DIS. How can we make the location of data clear to our customers?
Action: The BCR and KCC were contacted, 7/19/11, to find out which URL they would like scientists with inquiries about sample data to be directed. Hopefully direct links to these pages can be appended to the USIO site at http://iodp.tamu.edu/database/. It may also be useful to update the IODP-MI site with this information.
Item 4: We agreed on the legacy encoding in LIMS policy which I've attached. Currently Paul is adjusting Exps 324, 327, 330, 335 to reflect the policy. He asked the group to decide whether or not the labels produced from the LIMS database reflect the new nomenclature
Action: The group decided that the labels should reflect the new nomenclature, and that after Paul has finished adjusting the database Katerina and Peter should email the 327 and 335 scientists to inform them about the label situation.
Item 5: Possible purchase of a new parallel saw for the ship and perhaps GCR
Action: Steve Prinz is working on the specifications for a new parallel saw with Al the machinist. He will coordinate the order with Brad and Phil.
Item 6: Cubes for the spinner magnetometer
Currently the new IODP PMAG cubes do not fit in the spinner magnetometer. The Japanese have special cubes to measure anisotropy. These fit in the spinner.
Action: Steve will investigate how much the Japanese cubes will cost versus creating our own cubes. Phil can take a variety of existing IODP plastic cubes to the ship during school of rock to see if they will fit in the spinner.
