Present: Phil Rumford, Steve Prinz, Andrew Trefethen, Paul Foster, Katerina Petronotis, Jay Miller, David Houpt, John Miller.
Item 1: Review of Expedition 334 post cruise evaluations.
Action: Nothing of note to report.
Item 2: Formulate a response to Peter Blum’s piece log recommendations from Exp. 335.
Action: The following recommendation was forwarded to the Issues Management Team for approval and implementation:
Currently there is no Program requirement to record piece length. However the group sees this is a measurement desired by the science party. The historical convention for measuring piece size is to take the length of the midline of the archive piece. The group sees no reason to deviate from this convention. If there is a scientific reason or a business reason to make an alternative measurement of piece size, then the group is ready to entertain a discussion about this.
The group sees no reason to record or report any measurement of piece dimensions whole or half in the LIMS database other than the conventional measurement of piece length as described above. The science party is always welcome to report and collect other dimensions or measurements, the data can be recorded in the online data capture system and they will be reported in the data query if recorded. Bin Length will still be recorded as it is currently.
Item 3: Legacy Sample Encoding in LIMS
Our current implementation of the policy is:
· When a legacy sample is to be measured or sampled on the JR, it is added to LIMS with an expedition code of xxx (yyy) where xxx is the current expedition on the JR and yyy is the previous expedition which recovered the material being measured / sampled.
o The legacy sample material loaded in this way is to be marked with a legacy flag.
o This expedition code is to be given to all new samples and tests associated with this legacy sample material.
Our desired implementation of the policy is:
· When a legacy sample is to be measured or sampled on the JR, it is added to LIMS with an expedition code of yyy where yyy is the original expedition which recovered the material being measured / sampled.
o The legacy sample material loaded in this way is to be marked with a legacy flag. (Same as current procedure.)
o All new samples taken from this material will continue to carry the parent’s expedition code (no change from current processing).
o All new TESTS / RESULTS made on this material will be coded in the TEST table with the current expedition code. (This requires a change in current processing and an additional field on the TEST table.)
o Reports combining samples and tests from different expeditions would be displayed as xxx (yyy) as per policy. (This requires a change in reporting.)
There is no change to the sample table to encode the expedition which did the sampling, nor is any change desired at this time.Ample discussion with curation and TAS have made it clear that there is no desire to label the expedition that captured the sample and no need to report all samples taken by a specific expedition. If you have questions about this, please feel free to send them to me, but that is the current plan.
The changes for adding an expedition capture to TEST will require changes to the database, web services, and all retrieval systems (including L2E, web tabular, and LIMS Reports). Since retrieval systems are being changed, current expeditions which do not follow this pattern will need to be corrected (including 324, 327, 330, 335). This work will be completed as soon as resources can be scheduled to work on it.
Action: The group agreed upon the new/desired implementation of the policy.
Item 4: Review and approval of Tim Bronk’s project list for the tie –up period.
1 New tile saw enclosures for the ship: these will be made out of grey PVC plastic (similar to the old Felker saw enclosure) and I would like to have automated fans installed on the tops, similar to the old Felker saw enclosure. Currently we have a drainage problem with the saws on the ship. These enclosures will have drain pipes at the bottom to channel waste water to the sink. Fans will filter out particulates.
Action: Approved
2 More effective back-splash for the core saw: Currently the back-splash for the core saw is made of an old tile saw enclosure. I want to make a new back-splash that will be more effective than the old one. It will be made of grey PVC plastic.
Action: Approved
3 Maxim and I were talking about the particulate mist that comes off the core while being sawed with the core saw. I'd like to talk with Al Luginbill and see if we could come up with a cost-effective way to create negative pressure in the saw housing and trap as much of the particulates as possible. I believe we'll have to add some sort of blower/vacuum to the top of the housing. Rather than plumbing it into the ventilation system (which would be a nightmare, I believe) I think the exhaust can be re-directed & slowed down, dumping into the trough below the saw.
Action: The LWG would like to see a drawing of the proposed adaptation/modification to the saw as well as time and cost projections for them.
4 I would like to order new aluminum rules to replace the ruler tape on the core entry table & the core rack. The aluminum rulers will better withstand cleaning chemicals, etc. and stay usable indefinitely.
Action: The LWG recommends the use of FY11 funds to replace the rulers on the ship and shore. Chad Broyles and John Miller will get together to see if a cheaper vendor can be found to supply the rulers.
5 In the process of beefing up our old catwalk measuring-ruler, one of the rules was mounted backwards. I'd like to rebuild they ruler with grey PVC and 2 new aluminum rules. Maybe we should make a spare while we are at it?
Action: Approved.
Item of note regarding the collection of Routine Microbiological Samples (RMS):
It was noted that Mitch Malone has a directive from David Divens that we do not take RMS samples on USIO Expeditions.
Action: Future Expeditions will not be required to take RMS samples.
