Monday - pages 2-4

Vocab - howled, handlebars, peripheral vision, frantically, squinted

• How it dad feeling? How is Mac feeling? What are they both doing? Where are they?
• Where was the picture taken (middle bottom of page 3)

Vocab - compromise, route, sturdy, off-road, gravel, condition

• Why does it say ‘proposed’ route? What does a proposal mean?
• What was his plan? Why did he want to do this?

Create task - research St John and why Mac wanted to fundraise to buy them more ambulances.

Tuesday - page 5

• Why did dad need to train with him?
• Discuss elevation chart in guidebook. What it this, and why was it important to Mac?
• Calculate how far Mac was actually riding - 3,000 for the whole of NZ, half of that for north island. If he and his dad rode 80km everyday, how long would this take them?

Create task - using a map of New Zealand on Google Drawings, and Google Maps, mark out where Mac and his dad would ride each day (assuming they rode 80km) and find out where they could stay along the way.

Wednesday

• Who is Craig?
• Where did they start their journey? Why is the landscape like that in that place?
• Why might Mac have assumed there would be holiday homes along 90 mile beach? Why wasn’t there?
• How would you have felt at the end of day 1?

Create task - Create a list or picture mind map of all the things Mac and his dad would need for their trip. Remember they didn’t have a car with them - they had to carry everything they needed on their bikes, or buy it on the way.

Thursday

• How long did the trip take them?
• Who do you think Craig is now?
• Add up different foods to get to 1,500 kj?
• Was dad talking to Mac helpful or annoying? Why?
• Why did Mac have to eat so much?
• Did dad have to eat the same amount of food? Why or why not?

Create task - Using your map created on Tuesday, add in a picture of what Mac would have seen each day. For example, the picture on page 8 could be put next to the Pureora Forest.

Friday

• Why was Mac feeling like he was at the end of the trip?
• Why is dad “thinking about it”
• What are fat bikes and why were they invented?

Create task - Research the 3 different kinds of bikes. Create a labelled Google Drawing explaining the difference between the 3 and what you would use them for.
