Fletchers

Fletcher Building's financial woes have given heart to a group fighting its planned development of 480 homes at Ihumatao in south Auckland.

The company this week said the projected loss on major building projects like the Christchurch justice precinct and the new Auckland convention centre now stands at $660m, half a billion dollars more than a previous estimate of $160m.

Chair Ralph Norris announced he will step down at the AGM later this year.

Save Our Unique Landscape spokesperson Brendan Corbett says Fletcher can add Ihumatao to its list of badly thought out, badly-managed and financially-disastrous projects.

SOUL is calling on supporters to protest outside the Fletcher headquarters in Penrose at noon tomorrow.

Mr Corbett says the majority foreign-owned company used the fast track provisions of the failed Special Housing Area Act to secure consent, avoiding community consultation and ignoring the deep concerns of thousands of people.

He says the the protest is to give the company the message its shocking management and money-wasting processes are not wanted at Ihumatao.
