Currently most people in Dunedin travel from place to place by car and fewer people use other modes of transport such as busses. As the population grows, so too does the number of cars and this leads to increasing problems with traffic congestion and demand for car parks. Land that is used to build bigger roads and car parks could be better used for other things and cars also create noise, pollution and safety concerns. Cars are also a major contributor to greenhouse gases which are causing climate change.
How could Dunedin’s urban form (where activities are located and how the transport network is designed) and public transport services change to make transport in Dunedin more sustainable?
Key points to consider include how far people have to walk to access public transport, the most common types of trips and destinations, and how the location of new houses could help in ensuring public transport is accessible and efficient.
