Rules and guidelines

Design a model that shows a solution or vision for one of the six key issues.


  1. The challenge runs over term two and three.
  2. There will be an exhibition at the end of the challenge. 3-4th September at the Otago Polytechnic Student Hub.
  3. There is one entry per CLASS.
  4. There will be a section for physical models and a separate section for digital models.
  5. If displays use a device (iPad, Laptop, Computer etc) it must be incorporated into the base area, it cannot sit alongside.
  6. The challenge is open to all year groups and is not a competition.


Physical Model Section

  • Can be created out of physical materials such as paper, cardboard or wood.
  • All physical displays must have a base area no larger than 80cm wide x60cm length.
  • Can include microcontrollers such as MicroBit, Picaxe and MakeyMakey.
  • Can include a device for display/control purposes.
  • Can contain written information and graphics (Photos, diagrams etc) as part of the display.

Digital Model Section

  • Must be a digital outcome only, cannot contain physical pieces.
  • Suggested tools include CoSpacesEdu, Minecraft, Metaverse, Scratch, iMovie, Powerpoint, Google Slides etc.
  • Presented in a poster format A2 size for exhibition and PDF version for website.
  • Must include instructions for viewing the model.
  • Must be able to be viewed from the viewer's own device. Use links or preferably QR codes.
  • Can contain written information and graphics (Photos, diagrams etc) as part of the display.

Project Timeline

In order to get the most from this project, classes should be looking at a minimum of 10 weeks to complete the project. The project is live over both terms 2 and 3, so there is plenty of time to get stuck in.

Week 1: Identify your Dunedin 2040 issue(s) to explore and craft a driving question.

Week 2-4: Start your observation and finding out stages. Explore the issue through research and experts.

Week 5-6: Build your prototypes for your concept.

Week 7: Gain feedback on your prototypes (peers, teachers, school community, outside experts)and adjust as needed.

Week 8-9: Prepare final presentation.

Week 10: Present to your school community and choose an exhibit for September exhibition.
