South Dunedin faces current problems with flooding because water flows off the hills into the area, and because the groundwater (‘water table’) is very close to the surface. The ground water goes up and down throughout the day because it is connected to the sea via underground channels. The ground will get wetter over time because of projected sea level rise and climate change may result in increased storm intensity and surface flooding.
How should South Dunedin change to respond to the projected increase in future flooding?
Key points to consider include whether there should be engineering solutions to keep the water out, or whether all or some of the houses and people should be moved out of the area.
