Gilded Age

The late 19th century in America was a time of great contrasts: fantastic wealth made possible by the industrial age juxtaposed with shocking poverty. This was an era before social safety nets. The website below has a fairly lengthy but good overview of the era.

This age of incredible inequality set the stage for the progressive era, marked by diverse efforts at reforms. Read the biography of Ida B. Wells, best known for her anti-lynching journalism. Then learn about the Progressive Era.

Another reformer you heard about in the Gilded Age was Jane Addams, who began the Settlement House movement:
