In order to "settle" the continent, many Native Americans (Indians) were displaced. The video and link below will introduce you to one of the most infamous campaigns to steal lands from indigenous people.

by John Gast (1872). This painting was intended to be representative of the Zeitgeist (spirit of the age), meaning it was a depiction of the idea of manifest destiny. Look at the painting: what do the people, animals, etc. represent? What is the artists attitude towards US expansion?
