Immigration

Remember that as the 19th century progressed, the U.S. was expanding, pushing from the east coast to the west. This required an influx of new laborers and settlers.

Some immigrants were not as welcome as others, or were welcome only as long as they could be utilized to complete major projects. Unfortunately, Tacoma possesses a particularly ugly episode of 19th century's anti-immigrant backlash.

Urbanization

A major consequence of the influx of new immigrants and the rise of industrialization was the growth of large cities, where both factories and workers were to be found. Look at the following tables and answer the questions.
