UNFOLDING BUD
One is amazed
By a water-lily bud
Unfolding
With each passing day,
Taking on a richer color
And new dimensions.
One is not amazed,
At first glance,
By a poem,
Which is tight-closed
As a tiny bud.
Yet one is surprised
To see the poem
Gradually unfolding,
Revealing its rich inner self
As one reads it
Again
And over again.

Questions to think about for discussion:
What two things are being compared by the poem?
How are they alike?
What must you do to see how the things are alike?
What are some other things you could compare to these?
Homework:
The speaker in the poem is amazed by a small, everyday event. What is a common event that amazes you? Write as much as you can (but no more than one page!) and email it to me at cjensen@tacomacommunityhouse.org
Here's another poem, for fun. Practice reading it for its rhythm and rhyme.
My parents sent me to the store
to buy a loaf of bread.
I came home with a puppy
and a parakeet instead.
I came home with a guinea pig,
a hamster and a cat,
a turtle and a lizard
and a friendly little rat.
I also had a monkey
and a mongoose and a mouse.
Those animals went crazy
when I brought them in the house.
They barked and yelped and hissed
and chased my family out the door.
My parents never let me
do the shopping anymore.
