Oil Paint on Paper in an Antique Frame

The painting represents the lack of expression that often comes with traditional media, by having aspects of my identity hidden in flower language and a dour Victorian style. I wanted to communicate how we often have to hide aspects of ourselves when constrained to tradition, for example the pink and the flowers represent extreme femininity, as well as repression of sexuality in the artwork of Alison Bechdel, one of the inspirations for the piece. My main inspiration was Victorian portraiture, hence its composition and presentation in an antique frame, as I find it very beautiful, but sterile, superficial and almost sad.
