1. When a student is expected to report to the school campus, the student will be marked absent if he/she is not present.
2. SWSD families are expected to follow the District established procedure regarding student latenesses and absences. Families are expected to send in, mail, email, or scan medical excuse notes when preparing to return to school. The District must receive the note prior to a child returning to school and prior to boarding the school bus to return.
3. State requirements regarding attendance are in effect and will be followed by the District. Students are required to attend 180 days of school.
4. Although the District will follow state law and families may still receive the attendance letter in the mail from SWSD regarding your child's overall student absences, the District still encourages families to keep their child home when their child is not feeling well throughout this health pandemic.
In order to support greater flexibility with attendance to encourage families to keep their child home when sick, the District WILL NOT count the following absences toward truancy as long as the District receives the necessary documentation:
Student absences due to illness with a doctor's note
COVID required isolation and quarantine periods will not count toward truancy. It is essential that families comply with isolation and quarantine guidance. (Families will be required to provide the school district with the necessary medical documentation.)
Students required to isolate or quarantine will be permitted to engage in Distance Learning during this period of time. If students engage in Distance Learning, they will not be considered absent while isolating / quarantining.
Students sent home by the school nurse will not be counted as truant throughout the duration of that specific illness. It is essential that students NOT return until they are fever free for 72 hours without fever-reducing medications.
1. Students are expected to log-in to their Google Classroom(s) on each distance learning day and students are required to complete the attendance question as well as the day's expected learning activities.
2. Student attendance must be confirmed no later than 8:00 p.m. each day.
3. Students who do not log-in by 8:00 p.m. and complete the attendance question will be marked as absent from that teacher's class(es).
4. SWSD families are expected to follow the District established procedure regarding student absences and families are expected to mail/email/scan medical excuse notes to the main office when absent. This practice also applies to students enrolled in the Distance Learning Model.
5. State requirements regarding attendance are in effect, regardless of the learning modality, and attendance requirements will be followed by the District. Students are required to attend 180 days of school.
6. Although the District will follow state law and families may receive attendance letters in the mail from the District, excused absences (including required isolation and quarantine absences) WILL NOT be counted toward truant absence totals as long as the District receives the necessary documentation.
1. SWSD will maintain all attendance records regardless of the instructional model: hybrid learning or distance learning.
2. If your child is not logging in on his/her distance learning days or reporting to school as required, the District will follow all policies and procedures for contacting the parent/family.
3. If the school is unable to get in touch with a parent/family after making all reasonable and good faith attempts, the District will request Class III Officers or the local authorities to make a home check.
4. It is imperative all of the most up-to-date information is recorded in your School Messenger and On-Course accounts. Please identify emergency contacts who will be able to be reached during the school day.
5. The Division of Child Protection and Permanency will also be contacted in cases where the District believes there is educational neglect and truancy charges will be filed if appropriate.
1. All students are expected to adhere to New Jersey Department of Health and New Jersey State issued guidelines for isolating and quarantining. Isolation requires a 10 day exclusion and quarantine requires a 14 day exclusion.
2. Students who are required to participate in a precautionary isolation or quarantine period for any reason will be expected to engage in Distance Learning during that time. Students who are engaged in Distance Learning will not be considered "absent" from school. Please note: the student will temporarily be placed in a "Distance Learning Homeroom" during the period of time in which he/she is unable to return to the classroom due to quarantine or isolation.
3. SWSD families are expected to report required isolation or precautionary quarantines to school administration immediately. No child who participating in an isolation or quarantining period may attend school in-person until that precautionary period ends. The New Jersey Department of Health will be contacted in situations where families choose not to adhere to isolation or quarantine guidelines.
