Aviation and Aerospace

A Southwest High School STEM Course

Our mission

We seek to be a high school and district that are focused on providing students with the very best opportunity to succeed, because we recognize that the only thing a student needs is a chance! The Southwest Independent School District, in conjunction with support from our mentors in the Experimental Aviation Association, the Dee Howard Foundation and Aviation Nation will be providing a unique course where students can learn about all aspects of aviation. Our program gives a broad introduction to aviation and aerospace in the classroom, we introduce kids to A&P work through the build of a VANS RV-12iS and we also have Redbird simulators accompanied by free access to ground school to start paving a way to become a pilot.

Do I have your attention yet?

“Success is not a random act. It arises out of a predictable and powerful set of circumstances and opportunities.” 1

There is no other opportunity like this anywhere that combines all these elements of aviation in one place the way that SWISD has done. We have invested the time, effort and money into you and we just need you to SHOW UP! Take advantage of this wonderful opportunity and create a career for yourself in aviation!

There is a focus on Southwest High School at 4:43 in the video. Special thanks to the UTSA film crew that made the video and Haylee Mata and Zachary Ruiz for participating in the interview on behalf of their peers.

On Tuesday, April 16, 2019 we had two students recognized in front of the SWISD school board! Zachary Ruiz received a 10,000 dollar scholarship for flight training and David Gonzales received a scholarship to attend the EAA Aviation Academy in Oshkosh, Wisconsin!
