COLS 1101: College Success Skills

What is this course about?

This course emphasizes the development of skills necessary to be successful in personal, academic, and career-related pursuits. The course also includes COLS 1100’s orientation to college resources, policies, and procedures. This is the first course you would take as an orientation at Columbus State Community College.

Units of Instruction included in this curriculum:


  • How Do I Get Started? (Course Information, Online Resources, Campus Safety)

  • What’s My Dream? (Academic and Career Goal Setting, Project 1)

  • How Do I Study Effectively? (Time Management, Study Techniques, Note Taking, Critical Reading, Test Taking, and Test Anxiety)

  • What’s My Plan? (Academic Planning, Project 2)

  • How Can I Be An Effective Member of the CSCC Community? (Communication, Collaboration and Diversity, Student Conduct, Academic Integrity)

  • What Are My Resources? (Campus Resources, Project 3)

  • What About Me? (Student Standing, Financial Literacy, Money Management, College Health and Safety, Stress Management, and Problem Solving)

How many credits?

COLS 1101 a Career Technical Elective course. (Students will earn ½ high school credit and one full credit at Columbus State Community College)

Who can take?

This course is open to juniors and seniors.

A student who takes one full credit or two half credits in the same pathway will have their fine arts credits waived.

The CTE courses can be taken in lieu of the Fine Art courses.
