Yr 5 and 6

Welcome Yr 5 and 6

Remember to stay safe online and always let an adult know which websites you are using.

Week beginning 18th May

This week I will continue to set work on Education City. To access this work and to try out all the fun activities on this site, you need to send an email to get your log in details. Email: year5.6@swbschool.net

Hello Yr 5 and 6. I hope you are all safe and well.

I have been looking at all the online sites. Thank you to everyone who has been logging on and completing the work that is set. Make sure you try to log on every day to do at least one activity a day. It is really important that you don’t let your brains rust; get online and start working! Thank you to everyone who has shared work with me. I would love to see any pictures you have drawn and your writing. Remember, you can share your work with me at this email address: year5.6@swbschool.net

Watch this week's video to find out what Shah, Ellie and Helen have been up to!

If you would like to share your work please send it to year5.6@swbschool.net Who knows, you may become a star of the week!

Please note, next week is half term and there will be no new work on the website.

A lot of work is set on Accelerated Maths (homework assignment book). You can also finish exercises, tests and diagnostic tests in all the other assignment books. For more maths activities remember to use Mathletics. In addition to subject exercises here, there are also arithmetic tests set for you to do.

Reading: Remember to read every day! I have been checking Accelerated Reading everyday. Well done to the children who completed and passed tests this week. Aim to read a book this week and complete a quiz.

Don’t forget to keep logging into Spag.com too. It is important to keep all those Spag terms fresh in your brains so that you don't forget them.

Thank you to the children who have emailed me to get their log in details for Education City. They were able to access the Science homework here and to access all the fun activities on this site. If you haven’t already done so, email me for your log in details on yr5.6@swbschool.net

Keep doing your 10 minute a day Sat Buster tests and your reading comprehension exercises (3 per week) In addition to all these here are this week’s activities. If printing off is a problem, don’t worry, just write your answers on a separate piece of paper.

There is no need to print work off. Just work from the screen and write your answers on a separate piece of paper.

Leisure Poem recitation.mp4

Literacy

This week in Literacy we will be making a close study of the poem: Leisure by William Henry Davies. I set aside some of my time this week to learn the poem off by heart. Watch the video of me reciting the poem.

Leisure-copy of poem and examples of new stanzas.docx

Reading response

Read a copy of the poem for yourself and see if you can work out what the poem is about. Look for any poetical devices like similes, metaphors and personification. Can you spot the rhyme scheme? Think about the questions posed.

Spelling

Grab a piece of paper and a pencil and start the spelling video for this week’s spelling test. Some of the words are taken from the Yr 5/6 spelling bee list, which is in your homework diary. Some of the words relate to our Science topic on changes in materials. At the end of the video, I will go through the answers so that you can mark your work yourself.

ArithmeticPaper9.pdf

Mathematics

Do the new arithmetic paper and then afterwards check your answers which are at the end of the paper. Try to beat your score from last week.

Keep your tables ticking over by doing an online tables test . We usually do 80 questions division and multiplication up to 12 times table.

Next, do this worksheet on percentages and their equivalence. When you have finished, check your answers,

After you have watched the videos and done the work sheets, do the diagnostic test on place value on Accelerated Maths. This test will be assigned in the homework assignment book.

Science

Try out this Whack a mole game to test your knowledge of reversible and irreversible changes.

I have set more science work on the site Education City You will need to email me at yr5.6@swbschool.net for your log in details if you haven’t done so already. The activities are set in the Homework section. Your log in details will allow you to access lots of amazing activities in Education City so don’t delay, email today!

Science

Find out how much you have learnt about reversible and irreversible change by doing this end of unit assessment. When you have finished, use the answer sheet to mark your own work.

Science Investigation

I know you all love doing Science investigations so this week there are two investigations which you could try out at home. Remember to ask your parent’s permission first. This investigation is all about dissolving and is similar to the type of investigation we would do in school.

Science Investigation

I have been seeing lots of Rainbows at the moment, put up in support of the NHS. I thought you might like making your own rainbows in this experiment.

IPC

This week we will look at how governments are elected in the UK. Watch this video which will explain the process.

IPC

Look at the Powerpoint which gives further details about elections and voting. Play close attention to all the information and at the end, fill in this worksheet. The answers are at the end of the sheet so you can find out how many you scored.

IPC

Finally, imagine that you are going to stand in the next election as an MP (member for Parliament). Think about what you and your party might write in your Manifesto. A manifesto is a list of aims and promises that a party make to encourage voters to vote for them. Use the writing frame to help you to structure your ideas. Think very carefully about what is important to you. What priorities would you have if you were elected to parliament.

IT

This week we are building on the skills we used last week coding using Turtle. Go to Purple Mash and log in as a Year 5 or Year 6. Go to tools, coding Turtle. Complete the 6 activities and try to improve on your scores from last week. At every step there is a short video tutorial to help you if you get stuck. Happy coding!

IT

Use data generated from some science investigations to do some data handling. Go to Purple Mash and log in as a Year 5 or Year 6. Go to 2 graph. Use different graphs to display the data collected here. When you have finished your different graphs, save them into your folders. I look forward to seeing all the work you have done! If you have access to Excel, you might also like to try to create some of the graphs using this program.

IT E-Safety

Everybody is spending a lot more time online. It’s really important that we think about our online safety. Watch the video . Pause when the video asks you to and think carefully about what you would do in each situation.

Art

As part of a whole school art project, this week we would like you to do a coloured picture. This could be of your hand, a heart or ............anything else that brings to mind the inspirational work that the NHS are doing for us at this difficult time. However, there is a rule.........Yr 5 children must only use the colour purple to colour their art work and Yr 6 children must only use the colour dark blue to colour. This is because we would like to put all the pictures together to create a giant rainbow and every year group will paint one of the seven colours of the rainbow! It would be great if you could email me a picture of your artwork. Here are two pictures that Ellie's children did this week.

Yr 5 use purple

Yr 6 use dark blue

P.E.

If you are doing Joe Wicks every day, you will be getting fitter and fitter every day! Try this workout.
