Hello Yr 5 and 6. I hope you and your families are staying safe and well. This week, some Year 6 are back in school - welcome back! For those of you not going back, this home learning web page will give you most of the work you would have been doing in school.
Thank you to everyone who has logged on to all the online learning sites. Make sure you try to log on every day to do at least one activity. I would love to see some of the work you are doing for the home learning website. Share it with me by emailing me at:

Literacy
Reading: : Sunday 21st June was Father’s day. I hope you remembered to say a big thank you to your dad for everything he does for you. This week’s reading comprehension is all about the historical origins of Father’s Day. There are three levels. Either work your way up through the levels or pick a level. Did you know.............Gustav Holst's most famous piece of music is The Planet Suite. It was so famous that it was commemorated with a stamp! He didn't compose a piece of music about Pluto because when he created the music in 1914 Pluto had yet to be discovered. He didn't write a piece about planet Earth either. Reading comprehension
Sunday 21st June was also World Music Day. This week’s writing task is based around a very famous piece of classical music. Before doing the task, read this short information text about its composer, Gustav Holst and answer the questions here.
Writing
The writing task this week is to listen to the piece of music Mars, by Gustav Holst. This is from his work The Planet Suite. Watch this video while you listen to the music. Close your eyes and really think about what instruments are being played, what the music sounds like in terms of pitch (high or low), tempo (speed) dynamics (variation between parts of the music) and volume (loud/soft). Use these music appreciation prompts to help you and make notes as you listen. Write something that has been inspired by your listening to the music. This could be in the form of a description or a narrative (where you tell a story) or even a poem.

Spelling Grab a piece of paper and a pencil and start the spelling video for this week’s spelling test. This week, we will be focussing on words beginning with different common prefixes. If you would like to review these words, look at the spelling activities from Week 9. (see the bottom of the page)

This week we will be revising the Subjunctive. Watch this video which gives you an overview of when and how to use the subjunctive form in English and this video which gives you tips about how to form the subjunctive.
After watching the video, look at this Powerpoint and then do this mini test.

The subjunctive form is often use in formal speech or writing and it is rarely used in informal speech or writing. Look at this Powerpoint on the distinction between the two. Complete this sheet on formal and informal writing and this sheet on formal and informal speech before completing these exercises.

Keep your tables ticking over by doing an online tables test . We usually do 80 questions division and multiplication up to 12 times table. If you prefer, you can print off the test here and do it on paper here Remember to set a timer to record your time. Did you beat last week’s time and score?

In maths this week we will be revising coordinates. This video starts gives a reminder about how to read and plot coordinates. As you watch the video, you can pause and plot the coordinates on these blank coordinate grids.

Maths
This video explains the different forms of transformations that can be made by a shape or object on a coordinate grid. These can be: translation, reflection or rotation.
When you have watched the videos, complete this sheet on translations, this sheet on reflections and then this sheet on rotations. Finally, have a look at this sheet on using coordinates to enlarge an object.
Finally, go to Accelerated Maths and complete the diagnostic test on coordinate objectives that will be set in the Homework assignment book.

This half term we have been looking at flowering plants. Here is the work covered so far: Week 6: Parts of a plant and their function; Week 7: The Life Cycle of a flowering plant and how it reproduces; Week8: How a plant feeds and photosynthesis; Week 9 plant adaptations. If you missed any of the previous weeks check them out now by clicking a link at the bottom of this page.
This week, we are looking at what a plant needs to grow. Imagine you have a seed. Write down what you think it will need in order to start to germinate and grow.

Watch this video where an investigation is done to work out what a plant needs to grow. Pause the video when prompted to make your prediction. Pause the video during the growth of the seeds in different conditions and make observations about what is happening.

Write a short science report about the investigation using these questions as prompts.
· What is the investigation?
· What was my prediction?
· How was this tested?
· What equipment was used?
· What things were kept the same?
· What things were changed?
· What happened?
· What were the results? Conclusion – what did the investigation show?

Last week we had an overview of Abrahamic Religions. If you missed this, please go back to week 9 (at the bottom of this page). This week, we are looking at the oldest of the Abrahamic Religions: Judaism. This was the first religion to have a belief in one god. Watch this video which gives an overview of the Jewish Religion.

Read the fact files and do the interactive activity on Espresso (Search Judaism). Use the information from here and further research to help you answer these research questions.

Scroll down for the interactive puzzle. You are not allowed to repeat a colour in any row, column or diagonal. I have had several goes and I haven't succeeded yet! See if you can do better than me by solving the puzzle!

A lot of work is still set on Accelerated Maths (homework assignment book). You can also finish exercises, tests and diagnostic tests in all the other assignment books. For more maths activities remember to use Mathletics. In addition to subject exercises here, there are also arithmetic tests set for you to do.
Reading: Remember to read every day. I have been checking Accelerated Reading everyday. Well done to the children who completed and passed tests this week. Aim to read a book this week and complete a quiz.
Don’t forget to keep logging into Spag.com too. It is important to keep all those Spag terms fresh in your brains so that you don't forget them.
