Week 5 - Monday 18th May

If you would like to share your work with June please send it to shareyear4@swbschool.net

Hello all! I hope you are all keeping well and staying safe.

We finish our topic this week by moving on to the Iron Age, I hope you enjoy all the activities.

Also, as it's the end of this half term there are a few more test-like tasks. There's also a video from Kevin, he made it for younger children but I thought you'd like to watch it anyway, it's delightful!

Don’t forget to share you work with me! Or if you just want to write and tell me what you're doing that's fine too. If you need any help, send a message and I'll ring you as soon as I can.

Please note, next week is half term and there will be no new work on the website.

Literacy

1. SPELLINGS

We have now completed all of the plurals spellings, so we will now return to the Yr 4 Spelling Bee list. Here are the first 20 spellings. Ask an adult to read them to you, practise learning them throughout the week, then get someone to test you on Friday.

And.... you will love this! Max's Scratch Spelling Programme! A Scratch spelling programme of all of the Yr 4 Spelling Bee spellings! It's great! Thank you so much Max!

2. SPAG

1. As it is the end of term, I thought we could do another little Grammar and Punctuation test. It's best if you open it in Google slides and play it as a normal PowerPoint. It's like a quiz, it'll tell you the answers if you go wrong.

2. Here is a Rising Star test and a Cloze exercise for you to do. Remember if you can't print the worksheet just write the answers on a piece of paper or talk through them through with a parent. I'll add the answers on this page in two weeks.

3. READING / WRITING / IPC

1. Read Chapter 4 of ‘Blast to the past’.

2. Then try this ‘Blast to the past’ Crossword!

With clues based on the chapters we have read so far. Good luck!

3. As it's the last week of term, I've added Chapter 5, the final chapter, of 'Blast to the Past' here too. I hope you've enjoyed the story. After half term we'll be starting a new topic :-)

4. READING

Please keep reading your own books and your AR books. Don't forget to take tests and email me if you need one deleted. Look in Learning Resources for other reading resources. And don't forget you have a copy of Kensuke's Kingdom :-)

Maths

1. SPEED TRIAL

On the website timestable.me.uk use the online times tables tests, or if possible, print off the practice you know you need.

Remember to use 'Hit the button' on Topmarks too :-)

2. ARITHMETIC

As it's the end of term we usually have an Arithmetic test. Please complete this one. If you can't print it, please just write the answers on paper.

3. ACCELERATED MATHS

If you haven't completed your AM Group exercise on Equivalent Fractions please do it now and then I will update it.

If you did the AM Group exercise on Equivalent Fractions, please make sure you also do the AM Group exercise on Ordering Decimals and Fraction and Decimal equivalents. Thank you.

When you finish, remember there are Class exercises, Tests and Practices for you too and don’t forget Maths Facts! Oh, and the Diagnostic tests!

A big THANK YOU to all of you who’ve been working on your AM and Maths Facts, Mathletics and Education City :-)

Science

  • Education City - there will always be work waiting for you on this site. I've added some more work on Electricity for those of you who have completed everything so far! If you have…well done you!

IPC (History)

1. This week. we are moving on to the Iron Age.

First, here are 4 videos and 2 websites to help you find lots of information.

Start with Life in Iron Age, an animation about another prehistoric family. Next, some programmes made by archaeologist, Raksha Dave. The first of these is Discovering iron in Iron Age.

The second of her programmes is about Daily life in the Iron Age with information on the houses, food and... toilets! And the third is about Iron Age forts and tribes.

Next, below, the website BBC Bitesize has an interesting page about the Iron Age and so does this BBC Wales link.

2. Now, look at this PowerPoint for more information and then record six facts you have learned about the Iron Age in your book or on this worksheet.

3. Lastly, if you have time, there is a short Reading Comprehension on the Iron Age. There are actually three levels of difficulty, let a parent choose which comprehension would be best for you.

IPC (Art)

  • If you've looked at the information above, you will have noticed that people started weaving on looms during the Iron Age. So this week we're looking at Weaving on a Mini Loom.

  • The first video shows how you could weace using cardboard and wool. If you haven't got these, the second video shows you how to do Paper Weaving. I hope you're able to do at least one of them. Please share your work with me if you do :-)

  • If you want to do some Cave Painting drawings please look at Week 2. In Week 3, there were Mammoth and Stonehenge models. In Week 4, we looked at Beaker Pottery and patterns. I've seen lots of your artwork from each of these weeks and they're all fantastic! Keep it up! Keep sharing you work with me too!

ICT (Coding)

  • Keep playing LightBot and Cargo-Bot if you can.

  • Here is the Episode 4 of Think like a Coder if you’d like to learn how to… think like a coder!

  • Here's the next video in ‘The Adventures of Kara, Winston and the SMART crew’, about staying safe online. This week the Chapter 4: Who should you tell?

  • This week I've added BT's Code-a-Cake. I really enjoyed decorating the cake at the end!

PE and yoga

See Week 2 for PE with Joe Wicks and Cosmic Yoga for Kids.

Rio and Kate Ferdinand also do daily workouts if you'd like to look at those.

Extra:

Literacy: 'Blast to the Past' Chapter 5 Learning Resources. There are lots of good ideas here for writing activities. Here's the character profile if you'd like to describe the Sharman, it could also be fun to imagine you were Mumba or one of the tiny chicks and write from their point of view! Or write a review of the whole story.

Mathletics: there will always be work waiting for you, I try to set only 4-5 activities so you should be able to access Mathletics Live too.

Well done to those of you who use Mathletics regularly, one person has actually finished every task!

Education City: will always be work Maths, Literacy, Science and Computers waiting for you here. Well done to those of you who have kept up to date with everything I've set!

IPC: Stig of the Dump is a book written by Clive King in 1963. It's about the two friends, a young boy from the 1960s and a cave-man from the Stone Age!

The book can be downloaded from the Idea Store, but in the 1980s a TV programme of it was made. Here's Episode Two, there are five altogether, I'll post Episode Three after half term, but they're all on youtube if you can't wait!

David Walliams has lots of useful tips for Family time online.

Here is Kevin's video. Do share it with any younger brothers or sisters.

The Week magazine

I'm afraid we haven't been sent the next The Week Junior magazine. But if you are really missing it, tell your parents that there is a The Week Junior Podcast through the Fun Kids website and they might be able to subsribe to it.
