Welcome back! I hope you all had a great break and are keeping well?
Here we are at the beginning of our final half term in Year 3. It is certainly different, but I hope we can still do lots of great learning and have fun. As before, please keep up with all the regular routines that we would normally do in school (reading, AR, AM, speed quizzes, SPaG and spelling) and use the work on this page as a starting point for all your learning. In particular, please focus on getting your AMaths complete.
Thank you to everyone who sent me some work. Have look around the website and I’m sure you’ll find it somewhere!
Use this website as the starting point for your work; then feel free to do any extra you can, Mathletics, Education City and the workbooks you took home will help with this. If you are short of reading material sign up to the Idea Store, for free eBooks and loads of other goodies.
I can’t wait to see your work. Have a fantastic week…
Tony.
Help us create a huge rainbow artwork as a tribute to our amazing NHS and care staff.
Each year group has been assigned a colour. Our colour (Year 3) is GREEN. The challenge is to create a piece of artwork using only GREEN. The idea is, once we get back to school, we will create a huge rainbow collage using all our artworks. You could make a heart shape or draw around your hand; in fact you can create anything you want, but ONLY use the colour GREEN. Don't leave any white spaces as it will spoil the effect! Get creative, share them with me and keep the original safe for when we get back to school.
This week we are starting to look at ‘Telling the Time’. It’s a tricky one, so practice as much as you can around the house and with adults. Please ensure you have completed all the work on fractions and your AMaths is up-to-date. I will add the new objectives (on Telling the Time) when everything else is complete. REMEMBER – you can always go back and review the previous work using the tabs on the bottom of this page.
Start by watching these two introductory videos:
Once you're happy with the basics, work your way through these activities and videos.
Once you have worked your way through all of these. Print out these worksheets (if you can), otherwise just copy them out and answer the questions. This teaching clock face will be very helpful.
Throughout history, people have measured time. Some of the units of time that are used today are based on the movements of the Sun and the Earth.
Do you want to know how people have measured time through the ages? This video is great (you might have to turn on the subtitles)...
Times tables – use this website timestables.me.uk to generate speed quizzes - remember 60 questions (multiple & divide) with a 6 minute time cap – aim to get more accurate and faster over the week! FOCUS ON THE TIMES TABLES AND INVERSES YOU KNOW YOU NEED. Get an adult/older sibling to test you at the start and end of each week. Don’t worry if you can’t print out worksheets, just use paper.
This half-term we are looking at inventors who have helped to change the world.
George Stephenson is a very important figure in the history and development of railways in this country and around the world. He is often called the “Father of the Railways”. Research his life using these websites (and videos below in the IPC section).
This week, aim to complete at least two of these activities for Literacy and IPC.
Activity 1 – produce an information text, using any platform you want (handwritten, Word, PowerPoint, Pic Collage or anything similar), on George Stephenson’s life include images to illustrate your work and order them in chronological order.
Activity 2 – Imagine you are George Stephenson. Write a letter to your business partner. Try to persuade him/her to support your plan for a locomotive engine and railway. Think of at least three strong reasons why it is such a good idea and how you can make money. What will you say to convince them to help you?
Activity 3 – In 1828, the Railway Board announced a competition to determine which was the best engine. Stephenson’s ‘Rocket’ beat four other entrants on the grounds of weight, speed, power and reliability, achieving the dazzling speed of 29 mph on the final lap. Research as much information as you can about the ‘Rocket’ and make a poster showing these facts. Use images / pictures to illustrate your writing.
Activity 4 – ‘My Invention Design’ – print this sheet, if you can, otherwise just use paper. What is your invention for? What does it do? How will this help or improve people’s life? Share you designs with me and we’ll publish the best.
Spellings – This week’s spellings are ‘Suffixes - adding -ly'.
Suffixes are extra parts added to the ends of some words. For example, we can add -ly to the word love and make lovely.
Then, practice the spellings using this video, then check your answers.
Practice during the week and aim to beat your score on Friday.
SPaG – Chronological order – video and activity
Reading – We're delighted to have the Week Junior back, here's the latest issue.
Don't forget you can download books from the Idea Store online.
The UK became the centre of the train-building industry, sending engines all over the world. Before the development of the steam-train, it took 12 days to travel between Edinburgh and London on horseback. The Flying Scotsman took just 8 hours to travel the same distance.
These videos will give you more background on George Stephenson and the development of railways.
Don't forget, aim to complete at least two of the IPC/Literacy activities above. Please share them with me.
If you can, print and colour this image. Otherwise, you could copy it out.
Please finish 'Solids & liquids' on Education City. Our new science topic 'Magnets, springs & force' is now live on Education City. You need to get 80% before you can progress to the next level.
I've been doing these 'Kitchen Science' activities, at home, with my children. You might be able to do some of them too. They're great fun and you can do most of them with things you'll have in the kitchen. Make sure you get adult help.
I hope you've been trying the amazing Pete McKee workshop lessons? This week we are moving onto drawing animals. Have a go and please share them with me.
All being well, next week, I'll have some more of my masterpieces to share with you.
