Hi Year 3,
I hope you and all your family are keeping safe and well?
How did you get on with last week’s activities? Please share any work you have done, we will try and post as much as possible on the website. It will be lovely to see what everyone else is doing.
Make sure you keep up-to-date with AMaths (practices, exercises and tests), so I can keep adding new work for you. Hopefully, you have all joined the Idea Store online (I have) and you can download 1000s of free eBooks (loads of AR) and magazines – it’s brilliant.
Keeping checking out all the other online resources such as Mathletics and Education City. There are plenty of great activities that will support the work on this website. I know some of you have had problems accessing some of the stuff; we’re working on solutions.
Have a great week…
Tony.
This week are starting to look at fractions. Oak National Academy produced some wonderful lessons and activities. Start with Monday’s lesson here and work your way through each day (Monday-Friday).
If you need some extra explanation or activities, try Khan Academy too.
During the week, I will add the new AMaths objectives so make sure you’re up-to-date .
Times tables – use this website timestables.me.uk to generate speed quizzes - remember 60 questions (multiple & divide) with a 6 minute time cap – aim to get more accurate and faster over the week! FOCUS ON THE TIMES TABLES AND INVERSES YOU KNOW YOU NEED. Get an adult/older sibling to test you at the start and end of each week. Don’t worry if you can’t print out worksheets, just use paper.
Time for Chapter 2 of Blast to the Past… I hope you enjoyed the first one? Continue the story here. Remember you don’t need to print, you can read it straight from the screen.
Writing – Chapter 2 is full of detailed descriptions of fantastic Stone Age settings. Using lots of similes and adjectives write your own description of your favourite setting from Blast to the Past.
Create a character profile for Sam, Alissa, Moon and Rock. Think carefully about what you already know of these characters. For example, what are their strengths and weaknesses? What is your opinion of each character? Illustrate your profiles with a drawing showing what you think each character might look like.
Journal – Think about this proposition, “Time travel is a bad thing”, Do you agree or disagree and why? If you could travel backwards or forwards in time – where would you go and why? Share your thoughts on time travel – do you think it is possible or impossible?
Spellings – This week’s spellings are ‘Silent letters’. Use this video and practice sheet at the start of the week. Aim to beat your score on Friday.
Continuing our Early Man topic, first, go to Espresso, search ‘stone age’ and choose the top option. You can now watch the ‘New Stone Age’ video. Hopefully, this is now working for everyone. After that, watch these two fantastic animations.
Activities - Make a list of the ways life in the New Stone Age was different to life in the Mesolithic period: did it change a little or a lot? Does the granddad in the clip think it has changed for the better or the worse? What do you think?
Who hasn’t wondered what life seems to be during the Stone Age? The Flintstones cartoon may be the closest picture we can ever imagine, but a prehistoric village in Orkney Islands, Scotland takes us back to the life 5,000 years ago. The Skara Brae settlement, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the best preserved prehistoric houses in Western Europe. It is believed to be older than the Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids.
Research Skara Brae and Stonehenge using the resources below:
Activity - Using a shoe box, plastic tub, cereal box or any other container, create a 3-D model of the stone age world described in the videos and chapters 1 and 2 of Blast to the Past. You could make the animals out of plasticine? If this is not possible, make a Lego Model of a Stone Age settlement or draw a 2-D version on paper. Take some photos or video of your creation and email them across to me.
During lockdown, I have been trying to learn to draw better. I love the artist Pete McKee. He has been posting fantastic tutorial videos. Follow the videos and draw a Stone Age cartoon character and we’ll post them online. I'll post my effort next week. Have fun!
