Hello Year 3!
I hope you are all keeping well and staying safe. I do hope you will enjoy this week's activities. Please try your best to do all the Literacy and Maths, these are the most important. Then enjoy looking at the information on all the other subjects and our topic, Inventions. This week we look at the history of computing! Enjoy and don’t forget to share your work with me!
Also, some of you have been working on the white CGP SPaG books and Maths Workout books, and have asked for the answers to mark the work. PLease find the SPaG answers here and the 10 Minute Maths Workout answers here. A huge WELL DONE if you have nearly finished the books!

SPELLING
This week's spelling list is again a mixture of words from the Year 3 Spelling Bee and the Year 4 Spelling Bee. I will read out the list, you write the words down, then please check your spellings here. Practice during the week and aim to beat your score on Friday. Good luck!

3. Correct the Spelling Mistakes

WRITING
Each week we look at a short film, about an imaginary inventor or invention. This week the film is called 'The One For All'. I hope you enjoy it.
After watching 'The One For All' you have a choice of writing tasks...
You could write Geoff's biography, you may need to make up some details. You could retell Geoff's story or you could write journal entries in the role of Geoff. Or you could write a conversation between Geoff and his wife. You choose which ever you'd like to do!

Times Tables

FOCUS ON THE TIMES TABLES AND INVERSES YOU KNOW YOU NEED. Get an adult/older sibling to test you at the start and end of each week. Don’t worry if you can’t print out worksheets, just use paper or use the interactive quizes.
Arithmetic
As we are heading towards the end of term it's time for some testing. Here is a short arithmetic test.
Shape
1. This week we continue to look at an aspect of shape. We are looking at symmetry.
Symmetry is when a shape or object has two completely identical sides that are either facing each other or are around an axis. A line of symmetry is the line that divides the two identical parts, each part being a mirror reflection of the other.
First, please look at the What is symmetry? video and the BBC Bitesize page called 'What makes a shape symmetrical' which has a video too. There is also a useful Powerpoint called Lines of Symmetry. And you might enjoy the Symmetry Song below! Then please complete this Investigating Lines of Symmetry worksheet.
2. Next, please complete your AM class exercise which has questions on symmetry. If you have an unfinished exercise please do that first.
3. If you'd like to do more work on symmetry, here is another PowerPoint and a few worksheets. Enjoy!

This week we are looking at History of Computing.

Be creative, get drawing!
As we are looking at the History of Computing this week, I thought you might like to do some digital art. Here is a website with some useful links and suggestions. I also thought you might like to see Alice's poster of the Iron Age in which she used digital art for part of it. What would you like to draw?
Also, as we are looking at symmetry in maths I thought we could look at How to Draw an Islamic Geometric Repeating Pattern. There is squared paper here if you'd like to use some for this activity.

This week I thought we could look at reusing plastic bottles.
Here is a link to a website that has 56 Plastic Bottle Craft Ideas for Kids. Some of them are amazing!I love the Bottle Penguins!
Below are links to instructions on how to make a Butterfly Feeder, a Plastic Bootle Car and a plastic bottle LED Tea Light Candle Holder. Please ask for an adult's help for all of these as some involve some tricky cutting.

We laos looked at making string telephones with tin cans or plastic cups. Do have a look if you missed these.
A couple of weeks ago we were looking at using empty cereal boxes and toilet rolls for craft ideas. If you didn't see it do look back at Year 4's Week 7 and Year 3's Week 8.
Be imaginative, be inspired!
By the end of this topic I hope you will have an idea for your own invention. Remember, you don’t have to actually make it, a design drawing will do! If you like, use the squared paper here for your drawing but any paper will do.
To help inspire you first have a look at inventions by Sarah, Lily and Daisy. Then please look at the clips below.
To help inspire you further, here's a link to a video about child inventors over the years, I think some of the inventions will surprise you! Which invention do you like best?
Finally, another wonderful creation by Joseph Herscher this week it's his 'Hand-free snacking' machine to help Rashid eat while playing his video game! His machines use cause and effect to do a simple task in a very complicated way. Please don't do anything like this at home without permission! Look at those in previous weeks if you haven't already. I hope they all amuse and inspire you :-)
Science
Our new science topic 'Magnets, springs & force' is now live on Education City. You need to get 80% before you can progress to the next level.
Tony has been doing these 'Kitchen Science' activities, at home, with his children. You might be able to do some of them too. They're great fun and you can do most of them with things you'll have in the kitchen. Make sure you get adult help.
Fancy more Science? These practical science experiments can be done at home with your family. Have fun with them!

Mindful moments
I thought I would add some activities for when you might need to take a break. First there is a short video called '3 Minutes Body Scan Meditation', and here are links to a few Mindful Minute Brain Breaks from previous weeks, the Balloon Breaths, the Bubble Breaths, the Starfish Breaths, and Rainbow Breaths which are all so calming.
