Long Division

In fourth grade, students learn how to divide up to four-digit numbers by a one-digit number with both Partial Products, and the Box Method, which is similar to the Standard Algorithm.

Students learn that division is the operation that finds how  many items are divided equally into groups. They also learn that the dividend is the total (the number you will be dividing), the divisor is the number you are dividing by, and the quotient is the answer to the division problem. For example:  Dividend / Divisor = Quotient, so in the equation 30 / 6 = 5, 30 is the dividend, 6 is the divisor, and 5 is the quotient.

Interpreting Remainders

When solving word problems that involve division, sometimes you will end up with a remainder.  You have to interpret that remainder to be able to answer the question.  Sometimes you will drop the remainder, sometimes you will use the remainder, sometimes you will raise up to make one more group, and sometimes you will turn your answer into a mixed number.
