Lesson 1: Understand Place Value

In fourth grade, students learn how to write numbers up to the one million in standard form, word form, and expanded form.

They also learn how to identify both the place value position of each digit and the value of each digit.

See the place value chart below for the name of each place value position. The value of the digit means what the digit is "worth". For example, if there is a 6 in the thousands place, then the 6's value is 6,000.

Standard form is when you write a number using a digit for the value of each number.

Word form is when you represent a number with words.

Expanded form is you write numbers by writing the value of each number and connecting them with addition signs.

Every place value position is ten times greater than the place to It's right!

Students use their place value knowledge to learn how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. They are expected to recognize that each place value position is ten times greater than the place to its' right. They can use this knowledge to multiply and divide by multiples of ten.
