Lesson 4: Add Whole Numbers

In fourth grade, students learn how to add numbers up to one million.

When adding multi-digit numbers, students should remember to align the place value positions vertically before beginning to add. We teach them how to carry and regroup using their knowledge of place value.

We add when we know the two parts, and are looking for the total. Students learn that the two digits we are adding are called addends, and their answer is called the sum. Addition is commutative, so you can add the addends in any order and will still get the same sum.

Students also learn how to check to see if their addition answers are reasonable, using Estimation.

To estimate with addition, you round you round both numbers to the largest place value position that they have in common and add them up. Then, you check with the actual answer to see if your answer is reasonable.
