Literacy

Literacy covers all areas involving the English Language Arts, including reading and writing.

Reading in second grade transitions from "learn to read" to "read to learn". Most foundational reading skills have been taught in the previous grades. In second grade we work to teach them how to use these skills. We continue to review strategies early on in the year on how to read tricky words and understand what new material means in context. Next we move into comprehending what we read. This goes beyond your usual "who what where" identification. Students are now introduced to more complex thinking. We are looking more beyond the page and identifying things like theme, main idea, character development, comparisons etc. Students begin to identify with more nonfiction as well, learning how to identify the different text features in non fiction books and how to access the information in the books learning new topics.

In writing we focus on three main types: Narrative, Informational and Opinion. We access these three types of writing in various ways. For Narrative, we recount personal experiences, write friendly letters, and poems. For Informational, we write our own nonfiction books and biographies. For Opinion, we write book reviews, arguments about why we may like one thing over another, and sometimes persuasions to get you to feel the same way.

Related to writing we have to also build upon language skills and development. This includes spelling and grammar. To achieve these skills the students perform weekly word study practice where they focus on various spelling patterns. Gone are the days of receiving a spelling list that is to be memorized and regurgitated at the end of the week. Studies have shown that by learning the patterns used to spell words, a student's ability to spell should increase better than simple memorization. Also under the structure of language students work on basic writing conventions like capitals, and punctuation, and word classification (nouns, verbs, adjectives etc). They also learn various literary concepts like homophones, similes, synonyms and antonyms.

In the subpages provided you will find various websites, videos and activities students can do to help them to better understand the concepts listed above.
