Hello First Graders!
This is an assignment I did with a class this week that was so much fun! I recorded the lesson so you can follow along and draw with me! You can start the drawing in pencil like I did and then switch to marker/ crayon for outlining over your pencil drawing afterwards. Take your time and make your frog as serious, silly and funny as you wish!
For a background, you can have your frog sitting on a lily pad, a log or even just in the grass while trying to catch flies! Make it your own creation.
Color can be added with anything you choose...marker, crayon, colored pencils, paint, watercolor, etc.
Please let me know if you need any help along the way. You can email me at: diane.scherny@swanseaschools.org
Love, Mrs. S. :)
The 'Frog and Toad' book series are one of my favorites.
Look at the spots and bumps on the frog. It's looking right at you!
This shows the arm and leg design of the frog!
Kermit is such a cool, green frog.
Art Assignment:
Bring the fun of the ocean and visiting the aquarium home by making this cute fish craft. These colorful fish are simple to create and they look great with the fishbowl background. The stamped fish bubbles are lots of fun to make!
Trace a plate or round bowl cover on a white/light-colored paper to create your fish bowl. Leave one side of the circle open for the top of the fish bowl shape.
Using light blue colored paper or crayon-colored paper, cut a smaller circle for water area in fish bowl. Add small curve of tan paper for sand area at bottom.
Note: You may use green paper instead of tissue paper if you'd like.
Note: This is if you are using paint chip samples for your fish body. You can cut them out of colored paper on your own, instead.
Materials: white, colored paper, scissors, pencil glue stick, marker, white paint (optional)
You may also make the bubbles with a light colored marker instead of paint.
What superhero do you want to be today?
Hello artists! This is a fun project I thought you might like to do while creating an imaginary figure of yourself!
Everyone wants to be a superhero, but whatever your superpower is, create yourself as your own hero! Think of the things that make you special or something you would like to do to help out in our world. If you could do it as a superhero, what would you do?
Think what a typical day is for your superhero. I want to encourage you to get creative and think about not only the powers your superhero possesses but how your hero gets through a regular old day with them!
Materials:
One of the really good things about drawing a superhero these days, is that there are so many cool poses to get inspired by.
These line drawings give you some basic shapes to start with, but hopefully you will make them into your own.
Add a cape, adjust a skirt, change the monogram, or change the colors. Try using this as a starting point and see what kind of new superhero you can dream up!
This video is very inspiring! You are so much more than you know...
Adding a word to describe your superhero would be a nice touch to your art! Good luck!
While I have been planting in my garden, I've been thinking about what we plant and how they look not just above the dirt, but below. So much important work is going on underneath where we can't see! I thought we could draw what really is going on in the soil as our plants are growing.
Vegetables that grow in the ground are called root vegetables. This means their roots really are the parts of the vegetable that we eat!
What you’ll need:
Hello first graders! I hope you are all well! I think of you often! With all the windy days we have been having, I thought you might enjoy this book about how things can get blown around from the wind...like a pinwheel!
Adding a personal touch of your own art to your garden is fun while you are waiting for everything you planted to grow!
What you’ll need:
*While using scissors, please have a member of your family near for help in cutting.
Art Assignment:
Check out this pinwheel garden in New York City that is celebrating Prospect Park's 150th anniversary. Each pinwheel was made by people from the community. The pinwheel material is weatherproof. It is made from crushed stones. Even in the rain, it will hold up fine and not get soft like regular paper would. Each pinwheel has a message inside of why the park is important to them! Maybe you could have your own personal message inside your pinwheel art!
Even if you don't have a pet, by using the body shape of the cat as a base, you can change it a bit according to the animal you choose! A giraffe could be created from the cats' main body shape using a paper towel tube for neck and toilet tissue tubes for legs. Try it and let me know how you make out. I hope you are doing well these days ... thinking of you!
Love to you...
Guess what this couch is made of . . . Yes ... cardboard! The pillows and sofa cushions are wrapped with brown kraft paper. Cardboard is sturdier than you think!
It would be a great place for your cardboard animal to curl up on the sofa!
This cardboard structure is on its' way to becoming a chair!
You can see the support pieces on the bottom of the chair.
Art Assignment:
What do you think the top part of this "snake" is made of?

Hello! I thought you may like this activity that can you can make with your family and play with after!
This homemade play dough recipe is soft, lasts a long time, doesn’t stain little hands, and uses common ingredients you probably already have. Plus it is also non-toxic.
Plus it’s super quick and easy to make (you can make a batch in about 5 minutes) and less expensive than buying ready made play dough.
Homemade play dough is easy to make and store. Just drop it in a ziploc bag and it will last for months.
Llamas look pretty similar to their Alpaca cousins. The biggest difference is their hair. Alpacas are raised for their hair whereas the llamas hair isn’t as fine or fluffy. They are raised mostly as pack animals.
Enjoy this little llama story!
For all you first graders who are llama-lovers ...
(Hello, Mrs. Mello's class!)
Enjoy this activity and please share!
