Role of Mentor,Teacher, Learning Coach

and Deputy Head of School

(Students using the K12 OLS and PEAK)

When you have questions, the first person to ask should be your child’s Content Teacher or Mentor Teacher. In cases when they are unable to find the answer, you may be referred to the Deputy Head of School (similar to a Principal).

Each person has a specific role, which we would like to review so you will know who to go to when you have questions. In order to do that, here are the highlights of each person’s role in supporting your student.

Elementary School Teachers:

Our Kindergarten – 5th grade students are assigned a Homeroom Teacher. These teachers support student progress and Learning Coaches as questions arise. The teacher collects all required paperwork every learning period (these include a work sample, a work sample cover sheet and a PE log), takes attendance, and serves as the curriculum and assessment specialist. They also provide interventions for struggling students, and hold weekly Class Connect sessions that your student is encouraged to attend. Dates and times of Class Connect sessions will be communicated via email. If you are unable to locate Class Connect information, please reach out to the Teacher.

Middle School Teachers:

Our 6th-8th grade students are assigned a Middle School Teacher. These teachers support student progress and Learning Coaches as questions arise. The teacher collects all required paperwork every learning period (these include a work sample, a work sample cover sheet and a PE log), and serves as the curriculum and assessment specialist. They also provide interventions for struggling students, and hold weekly Class Connect sessions that your student is encouraged to attend. Dates and times of Class Connect sessions will be communicated via email. If you are unable to locate Class Connect information, please reach out to the Teacher.

Mentor Teacher:

Our grade 9-12 students are assigned a Mentor Teacher. The Mentor Teacher is here to support the families with school procedures. They will collect work samples and attendance, facilitate completion of the PE Log, monitor each student’s progress, and ultimately create report cards. They will be able to issue extensions when necessary, as well as request new course assignments. Their role is similar to a "homeroom teacher" who acts as a central person supporting a student’s overall progress.

Content Teacher:

Grade 9-12 students also have Content Teachers. Each subject will have a Content Teacher assigned. Content Teachers support students academically. They are responsible for grading submitted work and monitoring student progress. They also provide interventions for struggling students. Content Teachers hold weekly Class Connect sessions that your student is encouraged to attend. Dates and times of Class Connect sessions will be posted under Announcements on the course page. If you are unable to locate Class Connect information, please reach out to the Content Teacher.

Deputy Head of School: The DHOS is the school administrator in charge of curriculum, instruction, and assessment.

Learning Coach: This person is also frequently the parent. The Learning Coach ensures continuous student progress within the K-12 curriculum, including logging in daily to review lesson plans and attendance. Learning Coaches participate in scheduled parent-teacher calls, check email daily, submit student work samples/documents on schedule, ensure that students participate in required testing, and complete surveys when sent out. The Learning Coach is the primary contact for the student as they navigate their education.
