Level 1 Certificate in Sport (NCFE) - Apply here

The NCFE Level 1 Certificate in Sport have been accredited by the qualifications regulators for England, Wales and Northern Ireland,1 and are part of the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF).

This qualification aims to help support the learner’s personal development through acquiring skills and knowledge in sport, exercise and fitness. The qualifications also allow learners to gain personal transferrable skills that can be applied to the workplace or further study.

Course Content

The Level 1 Certificate in Sport consists of the following units:

  1.  Unit 01 Taking part in sport (4 credits)
  2.  Unit 02 Sports coaching (4 credits)
  3.  Unit 03 Leading others (4 credits)
  4.  Unit 04 Personal exercise and fitness (4 credits)
  5.  Unit 05 Effect of exercise on human body systems (4 credits)
  6.  Unit 06 Strength and conditioning (4 credits)
  7.  Unit 07 Health and nutrition (4 credits)
  8.  Unit 08 Developing sports volunteering skills (4 credits)
  9.  Unit 09 Assist at a sports event (4 credits)
  10.  Unit 10 Understanding the sport and active leisure sector (4 credits)
  11.  Unit 11 Exploring employment in the outdoor industry (4 credits)

The Level 2 Sports Leadership award will be completed during your course which will look great on your CV when applying for employment and/or further study.

Functional Skills / GCSE English & maths will also be delivered alongside your sports studies.

As part of the course, you will be required to complete work experience in a variety of sports settings as well as performing various roles within the organisation of sports events; this will include refereeing and officiating roles. This knowledge and experience will allow for further progression within seeking employment and/or further education options.

Teaching Methods

You will learn through practical sport experience and theoretical based learning. Groups are taught through classroom lectures, practical sport, group discussions and practical application of sporting theories. The course is assessed continuously through assignment & portfolio building to meet the specification criteria via an interactive learning platform, google classroom.

Course Assessment

Most units are assessed through assignments which are submitted via the interactive learning platform in a variety of formats; these include written reports, posters, practical sports, demonstrations, group tasks, interviews, practical coaching, presentations, work experience, projects, performance observation and time-constrained assessments. Two of the core units are assessed using an on screen test that will be completed under exam conditions.

Entry Requirements

Age 16 and a good reference on your character, attendance and punctuality.

Progression Opportunities

The NCFE qualifications in Sport have been developed to meet employer needs in the sport and active leisure sector and to give full-time learners the opportunity to enter employment in this sector or to progress to further education. In particular this course prepares students for the NCFE Level 2 Diploma in Sport as well as employment in the sport and active leisure industry.

Level 2 Diploma in Sport (NCFE) - Apply here

The Level 2 Diploma in Sport is a specialist work related course built around the NCFE platform. The course is to build knowledge of practical sports performance, training and personal fitness, running sports events and sport community volunteering. This course particularly suits those wanting to enter employment and/or further study in the sport and active leisure sector as you will gain valuable work experience, continue to study English and mathematics and complete a Level 1 award in Football Coaching.

Alongside the academic aspect of the course, you will also choose a pathway and either become a player of football or Futsal within a professional football club. You will compete within the Football League Trust’s Futsal League at EIS and Ponds Forge (Sheffield) as well as visit football clubs such as Huddersfield Town, Leeds, Barnsley and Nottingham Forest in the Northern Football League.

Upon successful completion of the course you will have the opportunity to progress on to a Level 3 study programme, with more prestigious work placement opportunities such as working in the clubs physio department or SUFC’s academy.

Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport / Level 3 Diploma in Sport (BTEC)


This is a 2 year full time course and offers you the opportunity to develop an understanding of the types of activities undertaken by sport professionals. It provides an introduction to the sector for learners looking to build a career in one of a variety of areas including careers in teaching, exercise and fitness, coaching and leadership, sports development and the outdoors.

The course is made up of a range sport specific units and you will typically learn about: Principles of Anatomy and Physiology in Sport, Sport Coaching, Assessing Risk in Sport, Fitness Training and Programming, Sports Injuries, Sports Nutrition, Sports Psychology, Sport Development, and many more.

Alongside the academic aspect of the course, you will also choose a pathway and either become a player of football or Futsal within a professional football club. You will compete within the Football League Trust’s Futsal League at EIS and Ponds Forge (Sheffield) as well as visit football clubs such as Huddersfield Town, Leeds, Barnsley and Nottingham Forest in the Northern Football League

You will be expected to study maths GCSE if you do not already possess it at grade C and will have the opportunity to study for additional qualifications such as National Governing Body awards which include: Community Sports Leadership Award, Basketball Activators as well as FA Level 1 in Coaching Football.

This course is a progression into higher education or employment in the field of sport. 100% of our learners since 2013 have had offers to stay in Higher Education. Learners who study the Diploma will need to achieve the Higher Level 3 in Sports Leadership to be offered a place in higher education.

Course Duration

Full time, 16 hours per week, September-July (37 weeks per year over two years)

Level 3 Diploma - AT LEAST 4 GCSE's at Grade A*-C or a Level 2 Diploma in Sport at Merit Level.

Method of Assessment

Assessment is by a combination of coursework, integrated assignments and examinations, practical assessments undertaken in industry and at SUFC.
