The Ocean

Pollution

So what’s wrong with the gorgeous blue oceans which surround our quickly evolving cities? The answer to that question is one word: Trash. Every day about 8 million pieces of trash pollute the pacific ocean! (condor.ferries.co.uk). That’s about 2.4 metric tonnes of trash entering the ocean every year! But how does this impact our ocean? When we pollute our oceans, the trash poses a tremendous danger to all marine species living in that environment.

Overfishing

There is another great hazard facing the Pacific Ocean: Overfishing. According to Conversation.org, “Increased demand for coastal fish species in the Pacific Islands fuels overfishing, which in turn threatens local food security, livelihoods, and ecosystems. If too many fish are captured the food web will be at risk, because predators of fish might starve because of limited amounts of food. Also, the prey of the fish species may overpopulate, causing an unbalance in the food chain.
