FAQ:
Q: Do I need to attend every practice and tournament to be part of the team?
A: No! While you must compete at least once during the year to be considered part of the team, you are free to pick and choose which tournaments to attend based on sports schedules, family vacations, etc. We do strongly recommend coming to practice as regularly as you can so that you build your skills. In addition, you need to attend a minimum of 3 practices before competing at a tournament.
SENIORS: In order to be eligible for an honor cord, you must compete at 3 tournaments during the year and be a member of the honor society.
Q: I'm interested in the club, but tournaments have already started. Is it too late to join?
A: Nope! New members are welcome at any point during the year!
Q: I have stage fright. Will I need to stand on a stage in front of lots of people?
A: No. Tournaments are held at schools, and individual rounds are held in classrooms, generally with around 1-5 other competitors depending on the event (Congress will have a few more than that). Audiences are usually not allowed except for final rounds, which novices generally do not reach.
The only reason Youtube shows lots of debates and speeches on stage is because most of these students have reached the final rounds at national tournaments, which means they are VERY good. We would love for you to get to this level, but for local tournaments, there's no need to worry.
Reach out to James McGuire (jkmcguire@students.wcpss.net) if you have any general questions along the way. If you have questions about a specific event, make sure you reach out to the event chairperson (find contact info on the event page). We're excited for you to join!
